PS I am in the opinion (mainly due to the chorus) that its crap. It the lyrics were different it may have faired better. But they aren't.

I have it on 45! I'm so lame! Picture a guy driving down the road, playing the dashboard like bongos and screaming GOLD! And you look next to you and see a car load of babes laughing their asses off.

this was one of my huge singles when i was a kid. It really takes me back to that time when i was 11 or 12 and really getting into music, and buying my own 45s instead of listening to what my parents had. I still love this song. It's unabashedly sentimental and emotional, but i have no problem with that. Still sounds fresh to my ears. Two thumbs way up!! [8D]

Personally i cannot imagine any New-Wave lover liking anything beyond the 1981 'Diamond' album. Before and with this album they were really great with singles like 'To Cut A Long Story Short', Instinction, Chant No.1'(12") and 'Paint Me Down' but as from the 'True' album they went all sloppy. Maybe a lot of people went all sloppy with them, but if you continued to like real New-Wave you would have hated them BIG-TIME by 1983.....

Everything i've heard from them i liked, but i think that gold might be my favorite by them. Loved that song as a kid and still do. I personally think that spandau ballet were as talented as bands like ultravox and china crisis.

I'm not a huge SB fan, but some tracks from both True and Parade (I'll Fly For You) aren't bad. Now, Through the Barracades--whoo boy--Through the Barracades to Power Ballads!

I agree, but we are talking about New-Wave, not? Bands that started as 'New-Wave' bands, have gone on to (try to) become mainstream bands. I Don't blame them, but it just wasn't 'New-Wave' anymore.

True was always a terrible terrible track.
They'd the odd half decent track earlier but this one was total rubbish.
There "look" also became incredibly conservative. They were a joke in the UK at the time.

Most of my musical fantasies involve Eddie Van Halen- or at least Brian Setzer-like guitar pyrotechnics. But this song makes me want to grab a mike and croon on the edge of a stage in a very fashionably cut white suit. Not many songs can do that to me. Great song.

To me, Gold falls somewhere between Chant No. 1 (I love it) and True (it's crap).
