Yes, Voices Carry is partly about domestic abuse but really more about her control freak partner who she rejects at the end of the song...or the video at least, which clarifies things a lot.

"cyclone ranger" is actually "psyched Lone Ranger". No way would I have determined this myself but found out through various websites.

"Pass The Dutchie" was a cover of "Pass The Kutchie" by the Mighty Diamonds. A kutchie is indeed a bong. Musical Youth wanted to sanitize it for more tender radio listeners.

Originally it was derived from "Dutch Oven" and is a large pot for cooking food. I remember asking some Jamaicans I knew at the time when the Musical Youth song came out, and they said it was a food bowl.

But Musical Youth cleaned it up... it has many meanings!

Since then it's a joint, but they say "splif" or in the case of a cigar a "blunt"....
