New Wave Outpost Forum

Anyone else into the early German New Wave? I've got a few compilations like "New Deutsch" and an old vinyl comp just called "Deutschland", another called "Tanz mit die Herzen" (or something like that). Seems the Germans were opperating on an entirely different level than most everyone else. Even Trio was "different" from most other bands of the time.

Before the era when it seemed like everywhere you turned, there was Australian music on US radio, there was an era when it seemed like everywhere you turned, there was German music on US radio. Kraftwerk, Nena, Peter Schilling, Alphaville, Trio, Falco (if you'll allow me the extension to Austrian artists), ..., we could create an entire thread of German bands that cracked the US market. (Dare I say worldwide market? I'll leave that to our international contributors.)

Their presence was so pervasive that non-German bands began releasing songs in German in that era. (See the German version of Icehouse - "Uniform".) Another potential thread perhaps.

Then there was the native German new wave, in German, for German consumption. There was a song called "Computer haben erschmerch" (sp?) by REK 1 (sp?) (in German) that they used to play on WLIR in the early/mid-80s that was really cool. Anyone have vinyl or CD of that one?

For anyone into this topic, I would highly recommend the Pop & Wave Spezial collection from Sony (Germany). It's an all German language addendum to the fantastic Pop & Wave collection. It should still be available from http://www.amazon.de (Amazon.com's German affiliate).

While you're at it, pick up the whole Pop & Wave collection, probably the single best New Wave collection that focuses on 80s New Wave from a European viewpoint. If you look at the used offerings on amazon.de, you might notice some discrepancies in the track listings for some volumes. Sony (Germany) has re-released this set several times since 1992 and some of the tracks have changed or been rearranged in subsequent editions. The artwork is different too.

There were a quite a few German bands/artists that I was quite fond of and some who had a little success with international audiences:

Nina Hagen, Die Toten Hosen, Xmal Deutschland, Trio, Geile Tiere, Die Haut, Blumfeld, Munchener Freiheit, Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF), Das Ich, Einstürzende Neubauten, Camouflage,
Laibach (OK, so they were Slovenian, but nearly always sang in German), Kraftwerk, Faust, Peter Schilling, Propaganda, Nico, Palais Schaumburg, Holger Hiller, Alphaville, Nena, Kleenex (although I think they may be Swiss), and many others that I can't think of right now.

Wow, I was surprised to find a thread on this already! I've been purcahsing quite a few NDW records recently, especially records on the ZickZack label.

Great link!In fact Kleenex were Swiss,and also known as Liliput,were the rawer answer to dub-punk of Slits.Some other german bands were;Gina X Performance,Ideal(very dark and special band),Spliff,Spider Murphy Gang(rock n roll revival with a punk edge),Interzone,La Dusseldorf(from kraut-rockers Neu!),Zeus B Held(later producer of Spear Of Destiny and others),Moving Hearts,Cluster(experimental rock),Tone Float(project band of two Kraftwerk members in mid seventees),Der Plan.Don't forget that the prog rock of germany,was the major contributor to post-punk,cold wave and minimal synth pop of this country and not only.

The NDW is the commercial pendant to the punk-related German Wave - just translated in german to "Neue Welle"
The classic NDW is the fun-based music played by: NENA, UKW, Frl. Menke, Hubert Kah, Markus, Peter Schilling, etc...
The main typical fact of being a NDW act is to sing in german and to have just fun, often really cheasy
The Neue Welle artists don't want to called NDW Bands, because they are more serious in making their style.

This is my little point of view...

What about the more electronic-based bands like Pyrolator, Christof Glowalla, DAF, bands like that?

Pyrolator is one of the real unique musicians, he does his stuff on the legendary brontologic. I'd seen the brontologic at the "Zurück zum Beton" Show... It's a really unbelievable synthesizer. He is one of the artists who started the sound and the image which later was occupied by the industry to form the NDW
DAF was similar, thex started as a punk band (anyone heard the "Produkt der Deutsch Amerikanischen Freundschaft" LP...?) Later they changed their style, went to London and become famous for their minimalistic music... They live at the house Daniel Miller (founder of the famous MUTE Label...)
Glowalla is a real Neue Welle artist, his song "Erde 80" is now a little famous on 80s related parties, but never become a real hit or something like that. I'd heard he had a stock of 200 singles of this song in his cellar around the year 2001, which are sold out in the meantime.

There are some artists, which started in the punk era and later become NDW stars, the most known are: Ideal, DAF, Die Krupps,...

Try to get them (but they are really hard to get, even in germany) and you probably get some really great German Wave Music
Or try to get the CD-Compilations "Teutonik Disaster 1+2", they are nice, and not too much NDW like.
If you like, we could trade some CD-Rs, I have some really great german wave...

I've got a lot of vinyl that I can rip to cd, but it takes me awhile to get it done.

Send me a list of what you are looking for and maybe I can fill some of it. I've got alot of punk and New Wave stuff.

And I would kill for a copy of the Erde 80 single!
