More bands starting with A and B?

I've recently been ripping my CDs to MP3 like a madman so was just doing some much needed backup today. I'm realizing there are a huge number of bands that start with the letter A, B, or C. Does someone know if this is a purposeful record label thing to get exposure earlier in the record rack...er...CD rack?

By chance alone (me and freakin stats!), there should about 3.8% of bands starting with A and inturn 7.7% and 11.5% respectively for A&B and A&B&C. But it's not even close. Out of 19,476 total mp3s, 4320 fall in the A thru C bands or 22.2% - what an outlier! But then again is the alphabet similarly skewed?

Sorry, random thoughts and too much time on my hands on a slow night!

I would think the alphabet is also skewed, there aren't as many words that begin with letters like i, k, q, x, and z.

Looking at my CD collection, there are far more S artists than anything else.

Wow, you're right Otters! I've got 2260 songs just in S. Although with complete Smiths and Smashing Pumpkins discogs plus extensive Splitz Enz, Sparks, and Stranglers, it's bound to be skewed for me. For you I'm thinking lots of Stereolab...and of course, if Belle & Sebastien were to have named themselve the opposite, forget it!!! [;)]

Yup, lots of Stereolab, Smiths, Supergrass, Super Furry Animals, Sloan, Soundtrack of Our Lives, Saint Etienne, and so on. S is a very popular letter in the indie world.

If you use a sample of the top 200 words written in the English language (makes up about 60% of all written English) you get the following:

A = 11%
B = 5%
C = 3%

So total would be about 19% of top 200 words in English beginning with A-C

Other big %

T = 11%
S = 9%
M = 8%
H = 7%
Of course the sample is not random which may skew the results, but 19% is closer to the 22% you came up with Blir.

Guess I have some free time on my hands, too

When I go CD hunting, the CD's are usually in the bins alphabetically (sort of) by artist. The letters I get most interested in looking through are B, C, D, J, L, S, T, and W. E, F, G, H, N, and O are second tier. I find myself enjoying going through M, P, and R the least.
Just thought I'd share. [:)]

I made some of the songs into mp3's and still cleaning them up, which is taking ages. Unfortunately, most of the vinyl did not come back in the condition it went to Utah in. If you want, feel free to email me; maybe we can hook up on the hub somehow or I can get you a CD-R of the stuff.

Sounds good, waukena! Maybe we can interest Schwenko and Blir into joining us? In the meantime, enjoy your trip, and don't forget the flask! [:)]
