From Akron/Ohio

Anyone into Akron/Ohio,small punk/new wave scene? I bought recently, the terrific same album from Bizarros,the most important local band after Devo.Bizzaros leader Nick Nicholis, owner of Clone label still goes strong into independent scene and his band had recently a new album after almost twenty five years.Some other bands from this place were Tin Heuy,Rubber City Rebels(had a split record with Bizarros,''from akron''),Waitresses and Swollen Monkeys,the last two in early eightees.The general music line was an ''industrial''-experimental punk rock, similar to Pere Ubu.The only exception was the mental electronic rock of Devo.And don't forget also the Akron originated Chrissie Hynde.

A few yearsago a friend of mine who is from Akron or thereabouts was able to get ahold of several copies of the entire Clone Records catalog. I got a few Tin Huey singles, a seald copy of The Rubber City Rebels 12", copies of the 2 comps Bowling Balls From Hell, and a few others.

The original copies of the comp "From Akron" had a scratch-n-sniff cover. Smelled like burning rubber.

I remember that record! Scratch-n-sniff and all. It was black and white, with a flying tire on the cover, I think.

I liked Pere Ubu's later stuff (the more pop albums -- Cloud Cuckooland, I think it was called, and the followup.) I saw them a few times in some really cool small clubs around the states. I was in a band in NY and we covered "Breath."

I know of Tin Huey, but never heard them, although I do know (as an acquaintence) Chris Butler who played with that band before going on to forming the Waitresses. Chris' solo stuff is really cool -- check it out at http://www.futurefossilmusic.com/ I met Chris a number of years ago in NYC -- he was a friend of a friend. We've been in and out of contact, but I know he's still playing and recording in various bands.
