"The Sexual Life of The Savages" traces the story of a set of Brazilian groups who took their inspiration from US groups such as ESG, Liquid Liquid, Arto Lindsay (himself a Brazilian) and DNA, James White and The Contortions as well as UK groups such as A Certain Ratio, The Pop Group, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Cabaret Voltaire and New Order.
With groups like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Chicks On Speed, Le Tigre, Liars, Radio 4 and other contemporary punk/dance bands taking their influences from this period, the music of these groups (all of whom have remained unknown outside of Brasil until now) will be a revelation.

The title from the album relates to the complicated relationship Brazilian musicians have with the music of the US and their ironic perception of how Brazilian music is seen outside the country.

The album comes with sleeve-notes and exclusive photographs that catalogue this underground Brazilian music scene.

Brazilian legends As Mercenarias (an all-female Brazilian equivalent of ESG) will be playing in London this year in conjunction with the release of this album.

This album spans the entire musical career of Mark Stewart, The Maffia and The Pop Group.

Curated by Mark Stewart, "Kiss the Future" is a mixture of new material (with new collaborators such as The Bug, Sanjay T), classic material from the legendary Pop Group (We are all Prostitutes, We Are Time, She Is Beyond Good and Evil) as well Stewart’s groundbreaking solo-work from the 1980s to the present day with the legendary Sugarhill Records/Tommy Boy rhythm section (as The Maffia) along with producer Adrian Sherwood (On U Sound). With unlimited access to the vaults "Kiss The Future" also includes rare and unreleased material.

Mark Stewart (at aged 17!) was the lead vocalist and revolutionary sloganeer behind the Pop Group, now cited as one of the most influential post-punk bands. In the 1980s and thru the 1990s he went on to form Mark Stewart and the Maffia releasing a range of heavily politicised, boundary-pushing albums fusing electronic, dub, twisted disco, and industrial-strength hip-hop into a unique ground-breaking sound.

The music ranges from Post-Punk/Funk to Electrofunk, Hip-Hop and Dub, Mark Stewart (with The Pop Group and The Maffia) brought Black music influences into Punk for the first time influencing a generation. This continues today with the punk electronic/dancehall/desi/ dub experiments of the new material (Radio Freedom, Puppet Master, The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum).

Mark Stewart is one of the most respected musical figures in music. LCD Soundsystem, DFA, The Liars,!!!, Radio 4, etc and the whole new wave of New York bands are heavily influenced by the sound.

He has constantly surrounded himself with creative artists. His group The Maffia features legendary New York musicians Doug Wimbush, Keith Le Blanc and Skip Macdonald. From their early days playing alongside Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaata and Sugarhill Gang the group have since played with everyone from Mos Def to The Last Poets, from James Brown to George Clinton.
The co-producer of The Pop Group is legendary Jamaican mixer Dennis Bovell and for his solo career Mark to this day works with Adrian Sherwood (On U Sound) who himself has an incredible list of credits that include Lee Perry, Junior Delgado, Bim Sherman, Einsturzende Neubaten, Andrew Weatherall, New Age Steppers, Primal Scream and many more.

As well as the original punk/funk outfit The Pop Group (which he founded) inventing what became The Bristol Sound and influencing the music of Massive Attack, Tricky (with whom Stewart collaborated) etc,

Mark Stewart himself is the artists’ artist: Two new recent Channel 4 TV programmes quoted both Nick Cave and Daddy G as choosing Mark Stewart as their favourite ever artist. With everyone from Carl Craig to Sonic Youth, DJ Hell to David Bowie (!) citing Mark Stewart as an influence, this album is the first to ever bring his musical career together.

Soul Jazz Records are releasing one of the seminal Post-Punk albums of all time. Following on from last month’s The Graveyard and The Ballroom, ACR’s "To Each" was their first full studio album and was produced by the legendary Martin Hannett and originally released on Factory Records in 1981. ACR’s "To Each" was recorded in East Orange, New Jersey. Here ACR mixed Funk, Dub, Percussion and Electronics to create a truly unique sound and the album was instantly hailed a classic.

ESG are made-up of the Scroggins sisters, Renee (vocals), Valerie (drums) and Marie(congas). The group now also features two of their daughters Chistelle (guitar) and Nicole(bass)!

Hailing from the Bronx, ESG were formed at the start of Hip-Hop. They became the most sampled of groups ever among their contemporaries such as Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Marley Marl and Grandmaster Flash.

Shortly afterwards they were adopted by the underground dance scene. ESG are indeed the only group to play at the opening night of Manchester's legendary Hacienda and the closing night of New York's equally legendary Paradise Garage where they shared the night with Larry Levan!

Originally signed to Factory Records in the UK their first album was produced by Martin Hannett and recorded at the same time as A Certain Ratio's classic "To Each" album. In the US they released music on New York's underground 99 Records label alongside New York's No Wave groups such as Liquid Liquid, The Bush Tetras and Konk.

This record features the groups that grew out of Punk and embraced dance music. These groups reflected the changing face of a British multi-cultural society in the aftermath of Punk, taking on new musical influences such as Black American dance music, Reggae and Electronic music.

A Certain Ratio were one of the first groups to be signed to Factory Records in Manchester. Whilst New Order and later The Happy Mondays came to be the most successful Manchester bands associated with bringing dance music into their sound, it is their original label-mates, A Certain Ratio, who were in fact the first band to make the connection between punk and US Black dance music.

It was A Certain Ratio who went to New York to record their first album that managed to mix a sparse Manchester bleakness in their sound along with US funk/dance elements. Finishing their album early they decided to offer their remaining studio time to a band who had recently opened for them in New York called ESG. This became the first ESG album for 99 Records in New York. A Certain Ratio¹s early cover of the US group Banbarra's "Shack Up" features the amazing funk drumming of new recruit Donald Johnson. The Banbarra track had been popular on the Northern Soul circuit and whilst ACR made music that expressed the depressed, decaying Sound of an industrial city in decline they were also true to their other Nothern roots which in Manchester, Leeds, Wigan and other Northern towns had been for many years US Soul, Funk and R¹n¹B. ACR would carry these two sensibilities throughout their career going on to embrace many other styles of dance music along the way including Disco, Reggae, Jazz and Brazilian music. "Knife Slits Water" is a classic extended disco mix that managed to bring the punk 7" into the world of the dance 12".

Sheffield became a focal point for DIY- electronic groups at the end of the 70s. The two most successful were Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League. Whilst Cabaret Voltaire stuck to their roots, signing to, and staying on, a fledgling new label, Rough Trade Records, The Human League would go on to international stardom as their experimental late-70s electronic music turned into 80s synth-pop. At the beginning, both these groups were interested in electronic music and how this music could be created within a punk ethos. Consequently, the all-electronic "Being Boiled" was created on a two-track tape recorder in mono!

The Pop Group were the forerunners of what came to be known as The Bristol Sound. Other groups that have come out of this chain include Rip, Rig and Panic, Maximum Joy, Massive Attack and Portishead. The Pop Group mixed Punk, Funk, Disco and Reggae influences into a sound that many future bands would emulate. The group was produced by Denis Bovell, founding member of Matumbi, and one of punks favourite producers- He would also produce The Slits as well as continuing to work with people such as Linton Kwesi Johnson. When the Pop Group split up, two groups were formed ­ Mark Stewart and The Mafia, and Rip,Rig and Panic which also featured a young Neneh Cherry.

Out of Leeds came The Gang of Four. Again mixing Punk with dance and a large dose of Marxist philosophy, The Gang of Four were initially released on the Edinburgh based independent label, Fast (as were The Human League). As we can see, Punk music affected every city in England. Other scenes that emerged from this could be found in Liverpool (Teardrop Explodes, Wah! Heat, Echo and The Bunnymen) and of course Coventry where The Specials and Two-Tone began mixing up Ska and Punk to enormous success.

London had got off to an early start with experimental-sound artists, This Heat. An early inspiration to many of the groups here, Camberwell¹s finest "24 Track Loop" is an incredible pre-curser to electronic, industrial music which sounds like an early version of Jungle. The concept of Industrial music would be taken a stage further by Throbbing Gristle who released music on their own Industrial Music label with the intent of pushing the boundary between music and noise.

23 Skidoo¹s interests stretched as far as Kung Fu, Gamelan Music, Language and Semiotics. Apart from this, they also managed to combine their musical influences like no-one else. On their classic album, "Seven Songs", Dance music, Experimental noise and Gamelan music combine in equal measures! "Vegas El Bandito" is taken from this record. "Coup" is one of the definitive dance records from this period. The line-up of the group features bass-player Sketch (who was also playing with Lynx) and original Jamaican Reggae hornsman Vin Gordon.

Finally, The Slits were possibly the closest of these groups to The Sex Pistols. Although they did not record until 1978 they were actually part of the first wave of Punk groups (and were part of the inner circle of friends ofThe Sex Pistols). "In The Beginning, There Was Rhythm" (produced by Dennis Bovell) was indeed a prophesy of the music to follow Punk, where Punk would meet Funk, Reggae and Disco.

Soul Jazz Records are releasing this retrospective of ESG. The album features all their classic tracks along side some rare recordings.

The story of ESG is one that gives them a place in three different musical histories - House music, Hip-Hop and Punk. A unique position that few other bands can claim.

Their first single contained the all-time dancefloor classics Moody and UFO which placed them at the root of House and Hip-Hop respectively. Their first record was produced by legendary producer Martin Hannett and released on Factory Records, reflecting the beginning of a point in time where punk groups in England such as New Order and A Certain Ratio were beginning to become interested in Black American dance music.

ESG are based around a group of sisters, Renee, Deborah, Valerie and Marie. The sparse raw funk sound that they created is unique and their music , reputation and associations has made them one of the cult bands of all time and this release intends to re-present them giving them their proper place in history.

ESG were involved with 99 Records in the US (as were Liquid Liquid). Owned by ESG s unofficial manager/producer Ed Bahlman, 99 Records spearheaded a new wave in US punk/ dance groups that became known as the No Wave. ESG (and 99 Records) also lost out in many similar cases - ESG s sparse minimal bass and drum sound made them one of the most sampled artists around (in 1993 they wrote a track Sample Credits Don t Pay our Bills ).

ESG were immersed in both the New York dance club scene and in the meeting of punk and dance culture. They played all the New York dance clubs such as Paradise Garage, Xenon, Danceteria as well as playing with many punk groups.. (They once played with The Clash and Grandmaster Flash on the same bill!).
