There have been copies, cover versions what about pure steals..two I can think of are:
Start By The Jam, a total steal of The Beatles' Taxman, right down to the"4 track " style mix. Different lyrics though.
Burn For You to a lesser degree by INXS steals a riff from John Claes Honi Soit. .... You know it, the keyboard bit afer each chorus.

Any others???

The Walk = Blue Monday (especially on the mixed up version)

Rancid's "Timebomb" is a total steal from the Specials' "Little Bitch"

The vocal style in The Faint's 'Southern Belles in London Sing' from Wet From Birth sounds exactly like 'Remembrance Day' from B-Movie. Or maybe that's just me.

Elastica's "Connection" steals Wire's guitar riff on "Three Girl Rhumba". I think Wire sued and they settled out of court?

Actually, Elastica also lifts Wire's riff on the "Lowdown" too. (or samples it? It's identical to the original, so I can't tell).

I think someone pointed out in another thread that Escape Club's "Wild Wild West" is too close to Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up."

I thought it was a blatant rip too until I read them saying it was a tribute to B-Movie.

"Hippie Chick" by SoHo stole the riff from The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?"[B)]

Not counting samples (which would be too numerous to mention), Johnny Hates Jazz's "I Don't Want to Be a Hero" was a pretty shameless rip-off of Shalamar's "I Can Make You Feel Good."

Going a little beyond the new wave era, there were at least two other successful lawsuits I can recall -- George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" (The Chiffons' "He's So Fine") and The Doors' "Hello, I Love You" (The Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night").

Everyone thinks Vanilla Ice 's "Ice Ice Baby" Rips off Queens "Under Pressure" but he doesnt. Queens is "Dum dum dum dee dee dum dum and Ice's is Dum Dum Dum Dee Dee Dee Dum. [:D]

The Killers' "Mr. Brightside" is a direct ripoff (or tribute?) to David Bowie's "Queen Bitch." Its so similar it almost HAS to be some sort of tribute.

I remember Billy Ocean got sued a couple of times for copyright infringement too. I can't remember the songs though, since I hated Billy Ocean.

Is anyone is familiar with Canadian dance producer/svengali/singer Bobby O.? He did solo stuff, produced the Flirts, Barbie & the Kens, Claudja Barry, Oh Romeo, etc. His catalog looks like a rip off of early 80's new wave & dance.
I recall there was some issue about him ripping off Blue Monday on one song (don't recall the title.)
Givin' Up is awful similar to Ministry's I wanted to Tell Her
The Flirts Helpless sounds exactly like Laura Branigan's Self Control.
I know there were others, I can't remember anymore off the top of my head though.

My Wife's Bitching sounds exactly like My Mom's Bitching...
