As a Synth virtuoso, he was very relevant to the 80's music scene.
I mean who can ignore the Miami Vice theme?
However... I REALLY loved his earlier work with Jeff Beck especially on 1980's 'There and Back'
'Star Cycle' is a kickass instrumental IMO [:p]

The instrumental "Evan" on the Miami Vice Soundtack is one of the best I have ever heard.

Yes, he was an interesting artist and he even played a "key-tar" keyboard.
....however, I don't remember anyone anywhere ever calling him or his music 'new wave' in the day. But I'll agree he can could certainly be enjoyed by a new wave fan without fear of retribution.

I bought recently a Jan Hammer album from 1975.As a recommendation from a friend, for a really strange artist, that ''plays without guitars'',seemed to me an obscure case in Devo, Passage style.His album is interesting more in a prog oriented cinematic direction,but without the quirkiness of new wave or its experimental passion.Lately remembered his name in Miami Vice series and the mystery solved.Maybe more fitted in new agers or Vangelis fans.

Ever see the video for the Miami Vice theme? He may not have been new wave, but he was wearing more eyeshadow than Boy George! [:D]
I recall that he released a couple of albums with the guitarist from Journey - Neil Schonn I think.
