new wavers as mixed tape messiahs??
Posted: Tue May 18, 2004 9:14 amOne thing that characterized my early new wave years - - making mixed tapes for others, trying to snag converts. "Spreading the word", as it were....
I soon learned that I was more-or-less alone - - not even the greatest songs by the Clash, XTC, Cure, Squeeze, Gang of 4, etc etc could convince my "FM Rock" pals. I don't recall ever getting anyone to 'play on our team'! I was always open to trying something new they liked (Def Leppard debut, 'Back in Black', etc) - - why wouldn't THEY try THIS stuff?? Was it THAT hard to get into??
When you did find someone into the music, it was like finding a lost sibling or something....
When I think of how many hours I spent getting the mix of songs 'just right' for someone who really couldn't care less......
This sound familar to anyone?
