Im here, listening to Puffyamyyummy, and i was thinking "i dont have any New Wave music from Japan??" (except Adolescent Sex by Japan...[8D]" I have lots of early Japanese Punk Rock (Friction, Stalin, Mirror, Mr Kite...) but seems i never heard about a new wave scene in Japan from the eighties ! Any record worth buying ??? Any good bands ?? Any Japanese Missing Persons clones ???

What is about Yellow Magic Orchestra?
Or Logic?
Really great New Wave / Synth Pop !!!

Yeah, you can't mention Japanese New Wave without mentioning Yellow Magic Orchestra, YMO for short. One of the coolest bands ever and Japan's answer to Kraftwerk. Pick up their best of if can get your hands on it. Make sure these songs are on there: Technopolis, Rydeen, Multiplies, Ballet, Solid State Survivor, La Femme Chinoise.

Another great Japanese New Wave band is Soft Ballet. Actually, there was a pretty good thread on this subject on the Genre & Styles section. Just search "Japanese" in that subject and you will find it.

Sean- Could you give me some album titles for Soft Ballet please? I am in Japan now and will track them down.

Is Sandii & The Sunsetz mentioned in the earlier thread? (Forgive me for being too lazy to look.) They had a hit down under with "Sticky Music" and a video in light rotation on MTV, "Open Sesame." Not great, but weird and memorable. I didn't really follow them after their records stopped being released in the U.S., but Sandii was a superstar in Japan. Maybe still is.

I picked this up yesterday. It was a version with a dvd included, with 3 or 4 videos.
There was also a 1992-1995 best of, again with dvd, but I passed on that. There were also 2 or 3 albums from the 90s.

Ippu Do were pretty good!!

Okay, I"m watching the video for Body to Body... reminds me a lot of depeche Mode- the lead singer clearly is inspired by Dave Gahan, vocally and sartorially (is that the right word?). The music seems midway between Black Celebration and Music for the Masses.
