Seeing as how New Wave is over 25 years old, my local Classic Rock radio station (yes, I listen to Classic Rock too) plays a few artists that started out in the New Wave era but are now deemed suitable for "classic rock". There aren't too many that fit the criteria I suppose, but these are the artists they play, and the songs from them. The songs the radio station plays may only be one or two from that artist, or it could be quite a few. Here are the songs that I recall being played regularly:

The Clash - Rock the Casbah; Should I Stay or Should I Go; Train In Vain

U2 - New Year's Day; Beautiful Day (classic rock?); Sunday Bloody Sunday; a few others

Billy Idol - Rebel Yell; White Wedding

Talking Heads - Life During Wartime; Burning Down the House; Take Me to the River; maybe another one or two I can't recall

Can anyone else think of other artists/songs that they have heard on Classic Rock stations?

The Cars started out on AOR stations (and still get played on classic rock stations). I think they're new wave all the way, though.

I was going to post this exact same topic a little while ago but forgot to do it. On our local classic rock station, we get all of the above and:

Greg Kihn - The Breakup Song


Crap, there are lots of others but I can't think of them now.

Both the Pretenders and the Police fit this category.

Funny to see those artists and songs. I still occasionally hear them when I happen to turn on the radio. The format or playlist hasn't changed in 25 years on one station here.

On the fringes of both, but "The Break-Up Song" by The Greg Kihn Band

I've heard:

"Cars" by Gary Numan (!)
"In a Big Country" by Big Country

on Classic Rock stations. But the Psychedelic Furs ? Waukena, [i]really[/i] [?] Wow !

KFOG in SF is a classic rock station and they play a lot of Pretenders, Police, Blondie and U2. I guess there are a handful of NW bands that have produce some great tunes that transcend their own genre. Some of these songs are still pure NW to me but they are so good that rock stations can't ignore them and then there are some songs that were results of some bands becoming so big and mainsteam that their sound went from NW to a more mainstream rock sound like in the case of the Police (Every Breath you Take), Blondie (autoamerican), U2 (anything from the 90's on), REM (Losing my Religion and etc).

In about 80-82 before we had a new wave station our local AOR station used to play

Nick Lowe - Cruel to be Kind & Switchboard Susan
Pete Shelley - Telephone Operator

I think there were others. Maybe they'll come to me later.
