I not really sure what you'd call this. You know when you have two songs cross-mixed on an album? What's the best 2-fer of its kind, whether it's based on the 2 best songs or just a great transition? I can't think of that many.

I was however listening to The Cars 1. It had been too long sing I heard the end of that album with "Moving in Stereo" melding into "All Mixed Up". Holy crap, is there an album that ends with a better duo? You've got the hard "bomp, bomp, bomp, bom-bom-bomp" of Moving in Stereo's bass being replaced by its cool synthesized fadeout. Just then, All Mixed Up's light guitar strums and cymbals come chiming in following by Ben Orr's gentle vocals. Man, I love that!

But it's almost a 3-song transition because a full minute-30 into the song comes the towering harmonied chorus of "She said to leave it to me (LEAVE IT TO MEEE-EEEE-EEEE!), Everything be alright (BE ALRIII-IIII-IIIIIGHT!)..." What a freakin rush! If you've listened too often to their Greatest Hits alone and not this album in awhile, treat yourself to this, one of the great album outros ever. Is it crazy to say it's perhaps better than the beginning even?! Which is saying a ton given its 1-2-3 of Good Times Roll-Best Friend's Girl-Just What I Needed is pretty untouchable itself!

One can't gush too much about the Cars' first album. I also love the transition from "Shoo Be Doo" to "Candy-O". Spine-tingling.

The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary/Fire Woman
U2 - An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart/Out of Control
Peter Gabriel - Red Rain/Sledgehammer (big mood change, but it sounds cool)

scramjet! you said mine! i love "shoo be do" into "candy-o"... i'm also nominating "summer's cauldron/grass" off of xtc's "skylarking"... ah hell, i nominate the whole album. those transitions on side one especially. SIDE ONE? how old am i?

88 Seconds/Native Daughters of the American West from OMD/Crush album - perfect segue.

The Kings! Jeez, how'd we not mention that right away?

And I guess classic rock must have had a million of 'em with Long Time being way up there. The Moody Blues' Forever Afternoon/Time to Get Away was good too...or the entire Days of Future Passed album for that matter. But jeez, then we have to bring in Dark Side of the Moon stuff like Speak to Me/Breath, etc.

BTW, is it hack to mention Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?

But the Cars still top my list.

Madonna's [i]You Can Dance[/i] mix comp has some decent ones, but since they're remixes I don't know if that counts. Otherwise, I'll say DeMode's [i]Black Celebration[/i] album features some goodies that make seamless transitions like that.

This Mortal Coil - Velvet Belly/The Jeweller

My 17 year old girlfriend made me a mix tape (she called the mix tape "she was 17") back in 1988 with these 2 songs on it. Her father worked as a jeweler and I think the song really touched her. It is a beautiful song and I'm grateful she exposed me to a lot of great music.

I also like the Hard Times/Love Action (or, is it the other way around?) segue from the 12".
