What bands and solo artists of NW have had the biggest fashion influence on mainstream pop culture?

Not new wave but Madonna, far and away. I remember a conversation I had at the time of her very first single. An apparently very prescient friend of mine, Beth, said flat out "just you wait and see, this is how all the girls will be dressing for the rest of the 80s." I was like, "Come on! Her stuff sucks. And walking around in underwear? Bullshit!"

LOL! Pretty standard practice nowadays...lace tops, bra straps, backless leather chaps...well only after WAY too much drinking. [:I]

yeah, Madonna, of course...and isn't there a scene from 'Fast Times' where Phoebe Cates is pointing out the various Pat Benatar clones?

I was trying to specify NW so we don't waste our time with mainstream aritsts, like Prince and Madonna. These obvious choices don't make interesting conversations.

Speaking of The Cars, I really wanted that Ric Ocasek mullet around '79 and did my best to reproduce it. I think they were "influential" in the skinny-tie area.

Okay, how about Haircut 100? That super preppy look continues to this day in some places, especially suburbia. Or was their look more a product of the environment rather than vice versa?

Depeche Mode let a generation of kids know that it's ok to wear black, black and more black. Preferably with some black leather. And maybe with some silver jewelry.

i'd agree with the depeche mode quote, it's ok to look heavy rock, without having to listen to it (i like KISS, but i draw the line at looking like one of them[}:)]).
i did buy a grey shirt in honour of ian curtis, last month, does that count?

i had the new wave mullet for a while(until my then girlfriend made me trim it) - for about a week they were quite the thing to have, but nowadays i see plenty of people under 20 with the high-street joan-jett/tom verlaine look!
incidentally, i sell the odd vintage item on e-bay, and when i find skinny black ties in thrift shops, they sell for ridiculous amounts(i've also sold golden orange ones... the more garish the colour, the more people want it - red skinny ties are also pretty popular!) - so it looks like THE KNACK are the band to dress like!!![:0]

Gosh, what I would for all my old skinny ties. And my suspenders too, lol! Remember how Michael J. Fox popularized them with Back To The Future?
