Stevo of The Vandals

I occasionally read on-line issues of newspapers from the North Coast of California. When I saw an obituary listed under this person's name, I thought, huh, that name sorta sounds familiar. Well, here's why:

Former Mendocino Coast resident, Steve Jensen, passed on at his home at Kehei, Hawaii on Aug. 20, 2005 at the age of 46.


Steve was known as a kind, gentle, big-hearted man. Over the years he wore many hats. On Maui, he was known as an accomplished dive master, having spent time most recently on The Pride of Maui. Steve was dedicated to helping others in any way he could. As a Red Cross disaster volunteer, Steve helped hurricane victims in Somoa and Florida.


A deeply spiritual man, Steve was a devotee of Paramahansa Yogananda, having recently been initiated into Krya Yoga. He regularly participated in meditation groups and practiced daily meditation.


While in Mendocino and Maui, Steve's reputation as an especially skilled Bowen therapist and massage therapist were well known. He managed a massage therapy clinic on Maui for several years and constantly upgraded his repertoire of healing skills.


At various times in his life he was a carpenter, a fence builder, an organic gardener, an innkeeper, a limo driver, a Big Brother, and a teacher's aide at the Mendocino Grammar School.


Perhaps he was most well known as lead singer/songwriter in a punk rock band in the '80s known as the Vandals. "Stevo," as his fans knew him, was famous for his outrageous humor and off-the-wall stage antics.


Steve's many friends recall that he was a person who always had time to listen, that he never judged people, and that he would do anything for a friend. He brought joy and laughter into many lives.


Steve had a special place in his heart for his lodge brothers, the Loyal Order Of The Water Buffalo, who held a memorial in his honor in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 4. The lodge has a memorial Website at www.stevojensen.com.


Steve's ashes were scattered over one of his favorite dive spots off the coast of Maui near Red Hill in a private family ceremony, attended by Ron Jensen, his father, Millie Jensen, his mother, and Jennifer Jensen, Steve's sister. Friends and neighbors attended a sunset memorial service at Kamala Park in Kehei on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Are you kidding me? WOW!!!!! Sucky sucky sucky news! I hadn't yet heard this. Thanx for posting it. It's a shame we lose so many people that mean so much to us so young. That is just...unbelievable. Really.[:(]

Yeah, that really is a drag. I loved the first two Vandals records & if I'm not mistaken, those are the only two that featured Stevo. Damn shame.
