Ok, New Order is releasing another greatest hits in October. Why?!? How many Greatest Hits or Greatest Hits type collections do they have now? It's almost like they release a greatest hits with every new album. Don't get me wrong, I love the band to death but I think this is overkill. The DVD release, for instance, is outstanding.

I agree Sean. I question the necessitation of this greatest hits release. But the DVD is totally a welcome release.

Obviously tons of overlap, but the previous releases always had some weakness. Greatest Hits often had funky versions or didn't have a particular hit single - it was their picks for "greatest". Substance was a mix of their singles and plus lotsa non-album material. In both cases, they've released 4 studio albums since then. Retro's got hits, picks, mixes, and choices but maybe one doesn't want all that.

Singles is just their singles, updated to their latest album. So if you got into them late or never really bought much of their stuff, you could own a good, modern representation of NO in one fell swoop. I'd say kinda like the Beatles 1 set after their Blue and Reb "best ofs". But it's probably prematures (I hope) since they've said more albums are to come. So yeah, it's kinda odd.

No. Shameful to do another one of these compilations when they just released a new album and have (tentative) plans for the next album to be released in less than a year.

These types of packages usually aren't a band decision. It's almost always a label decision, and sometimes it's contractual. Personally, I think it's going to be a great one as it is supposed to contain all single mixes!

As I've said before, this would be worth if it included the ORIGINAL 7" mix of "Temptation." As far as I know, it has never appeared on CD (except in an oddly edited version on the "Something Wild" soundtrack.)

The original 12" mix is on the Devolution One CD, but aside from that, all that's available is the inferior '87 re-recording.

I think hits collections are just revenue generators. And it's obvious when you have so many hits collections from a particular band. Like Blir says, the overlap is enormous. I can almost understand if it's a singles collection for archival purposes but again, the overlap just makes it look like little more than the tried and true money making thing that it is.

Plus, labels always put out hits collections at the end of the year for Xmas, etc.

If they are all single mixes (hopefully a tad bit different from the album versions), then it might be kind of cool. Man they are milking us for every penny.

Labels will often release different packages at a variety of price points to target different consumers. Some want a single-disc greatest hits, some want a 2-disc set, other "just want that one song" and would be happy with a little budget package.

Hmmm. It's a tough choice between Jackson Browne's greatest hits compilation and yet another NewOrder best of. My head is spinning, this is too tough of a choice![xx(]

I agree this is just a cash grab by the lable, The Cure are bad for doing this as well...

Maybe they shuld just rename it 'Greatest 2 hits and The Rest' as they had only two big hits (Blue Monday & True Faith). [:D]
