Peter Hook was asked what was the signature #1 classic of the Hacienda days. He picked Rhythm is a Dancer by Snap! Wow, what a cheesy late 80s flashback. Anyone else recall wallowing in the cheese with this one?

The really dissapointing part is that I can't imagine Strummer or Jones of the Clash replying in kind with a song like this. Doesn't Hooky know I have to show my face here around Waukena?!

Yeah, in Europe they really get hooked on these cheesy dance numbers sometimes. It's a little bit of a [V] but whatever. It's attractive because it's an American import I guess. I sometimes hear the same from the Pet Shop Boys when they talk about their early days and what influenced them. You often hear about Bobby O acts and early rap like The Message by Grandmaster Fash.

Yeah jeez when I heard that song I used to think the lyrics were:

rhythm is a dancer
it's a source of cancer

I was just listening to my recording of Whitehouse in the 7th Street Entry (it's a side room of First Avenue) 1993. During their "song" Birth Death Experience (which is 3 minutes of silence) you can hear "What Is Love" by Haddaway playing in First Ave. I was quite taken aback that the First Ave DJ would stoop so low, but I guess in '93 it was a hit dance song.

Totally! The times I've lived overseas, they LOVE that stuff. After 1994, Mr. KYYX & I put together a Baltic "techno" mix (it's what they called techno) just to remind ourselves of this crap (but fun, catchy, danceable crap nonetheless) that was CONSTANTLY playing:

It should be noted that, for their initial release, the Pet Shop Boys [i]were[/i] a Bobby O act.

Westend Girls appears on my Best of O records cd - a little different mix.

Oh eurodisco - all those songs you mention KYYX - driven into my head every weekend night. I still have a huge stash of eurodisco cds - I was really into it for a while...strangely, I'm not ashamed to admit that.

Euro was pretty big over here too, you just had to go to bars where there weren't a lot of girls - biological ones at least. [:D]

I suffered having to listen to these tracks repeatedly on weekends in college several of my friends listened to this Euro-cheese. And they made fun of my for listening to Depeche Mode.

Yup, actually on a label he set up, "Bobcat Records" (but not on "O Records") with a big ol' "Mixed By Bobby O" tag at the bottom; strangely, it also says "Produced by Bobby Orlando" - weird that he went by both names.

So, a "sorta-hijacking-this-thread" question, how many people like Bobby O's mix of West End Girls more than the '86 Top 40 version? Maybe because I'm a corporate boy sell-out, I totally don't get that "older" version...it's too unpolished for my tastes, plus I love the horn section!

I'm with you on that; the later release is the better version unless you really like 80's cheese. (Somehow, a 10" version of that in a round sleeve wound up in my hands; a friend of mine had started up at Capitol/EMI and surprised me with it.)
