I am looking for som introductory genre defining music from the era to purchase on vinyl or cd. Any help would be much appreciated. This music is endless fun [:)]

A Flock of Seagulls

The Clash - London Calling (I would consider the first 2 albums punk)
Devo - New Traditionalists
Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
Gary Numan - Pleasure Principle
The Jam - Snap

I think this is a good representation of different sounds and styles...

Blondie - Parallel Lines
B52s- B52s
Pretenders - Singles
Police - Outlandos D'amor
OMD - Greatest Hits

Minor quibble - the "New Wave 101" album would probably be "Freedom Of Choice" (though New Traditionalists is a close second.)

Madness - Madness (US release) or One Step Beyond
Gang Of Four - Entertainment!
New Order - Low Life

And, of course, The Sire Box or, if you're on a budget, Sire's "Just Say Yesterday" compilation.

Siouxsie & the Banshees, while not new wave, certainly rounded out the sounds of the new wave era.

Yep, there's a couple of 'best ofs' as well as their release of their albums on CD, check GEMM.

Do a search in this forum for "Top 500 songs" or "Top 100 Albums" (for some reason I keep getting a time-out when I do it)

The Human League - "Dare"
XTC - "Drums And Wires"
Talking Heads - "77"
Oingo Boingo - "Only A Lad"
Depeche Mode - "Speak & Spell" or "Construction Time Again"
The Police - "Outlandis D'Amour"
Gary Numan - "The Pleasure Principle"

Yeah, I think that's pretty representative.

Oh and "Look Sharp!" by Joe Jackson.
