Ok, So perhaps I'm missing whatever neurons that most people have that love this guy. But I'm listening to XM's U-Pop station (hits from around the world) when his, um, "cover" of the Heads' song comes on (dueting with the Cardigans, no less). To call the cover terrible doesn't decribe it properly. In more accurate terms this song (to borrow a phrase from Good Morning Vietnam) sucked the sweat from a dead man's balls. Just absolutely one of the worst covers I've ever heard. I'm sure it will be a hit.[xx(]

No danger of that - it came out a few years back, and faded into the obscurity it so richly deserves. Though his cover of Prince's "Kiss" with Art Of Noise is the bees' knees.

Besides, dead men don't sweat...

During the 60's and early 70's he had a variety show on the BBC, I think. He had an amazing voice back then. I think he released the songs you speak of as a lark. I've never gotten the impression that he's a guy who is having anything but a good time. Listen to Thunderball again sometime.

It's like people who look at Bob Hope in his later years and say he's not funny. Well, no, it's more the residual from many decades of being funny.We're going to be watching Steve Martin when he's ninety and laughing our asses off and our grandkids will wonder why.

I just think he's hilarious. So overly dramatic, campy, almost spoofy. You can't really take him too seriously.

It was not a lark, it was from an entire album of collaboration cover songs called "Reload" (released in 1999).

He also had a variety show in the U.S. I remember my mother would get all giggley over him, and she would only play his albums when my father wasn't home. I suspect my dad was a bit threatened by Tom. I have good memories of my mother singing along to Delilah, so I suppose I have a soft spot for the guy. He was also pretty funny in Mars Attacks.
I remember there was a lot of speculation that Tom stuffed his pants with a sock.
