As most of you know, I have a hand in producing a commercial-free, no one makes a dime from it, 80's music show on Long Island's public radio station 90.3FM.

This Sunday, the show's host Jaime will be doing a phone interview with Cy Curnin from The Fixx (Mr. Curnin is in France right now). Since we have a lot of Fixx fans here, I figured I'd come to you and ask you to submit some questions. Any plans for a definitive Fixx video collection on DVD? How about a live performance DVD? Any early material sitting in the vaults that might soon see the light of day?

I'll try a couple
1. What is Cy's process for writing songs. Does he work with the other band members first, or bring them in later?
2. What is his personal favorite Fixx song and why?

I'd heard a while ago that he made (or designed) hats. Does he still do this? Where can I see them?

What are some of the bands he considers as influences in creating the distinct sound of The Fixx? What bands or styles of music is he listening to now?

What is his take on the term "new wave"? Does he feel any affiliation with that genre of music?
(I expect him to say we don't like labels etc etc but wouldn't it be something if he would say yeah, I'm proud to feel a part of it?)


What did he think of the whole "Rock Star INXS" idea?


Were there any decisions he or his band made during their career that he regrets?

Howz about how he would rate British fans -vs- American fans.

Maybe if He notices if any newwer bands show a fixx influence.
(I notice quite a bit of the newwer groups are emulating 80's bands)

I'd try to phrase it as politely as possible, but I'd be curious how the band's relationship with their major label (MCA) changed over the course of their relationship. IMHO, MCA were not that great at promoting promising bands they signed; The Fixx is an exception, and I wonder how they felt about the label's support.

Patchy, did the interview ever take place? I didn't see it on your link....

Ask him if one thing does truely lead to another. And if so, how can he be so sure?

I just wanted to give you an Update. Jaime did the interview on Sunday, and reports that it went "great!!!!" and that Cy was "really nice and easy to talk to."

As soon as I get the 25-minute(!) interview in my hands, I will post it on the web. (Check out the Live Aid thingee there too)

I heard some of the interview yesterday.

It was done as if it was a live show, so Jaime is editing it for her program. (She said that she will leave me a copy, when I come in to do my little sports show on Tuesday night.) If I put it up the way that it was recorded, it will sound funny. For example, if Cy said "Well, 'Lost Planes' was our first single. It didn't chart, but it got us a record deal...." Jaime would then say, 'Well, let's hear that song right here on Essential 80's..." and then there would be a pregnant pause where she would insert "Lost Planes." I mention this little nugget, because she promoted the interview on the station's Free-For-All rock show yesterday, by playing "Lost Planes." She also played a station ID that Cy was kind enough to record for the station, and for her show.

A couple of interesting things from what I heard:

--Birds chirping in the background. Can't get more pastoral than Cy's place in France, huh?

--Jaime first got Cy's cell phone voicemail and home phone voicemail. Maybe it's just me, but it's kinda like a cool "I'm a rock star, but I put my pants on one leg at a time just like you" moment." (Maybe those could be like "Easter Eggs" that you find in DVD's.)

--He comes across as charming and witty--and if I can say this without it sounding snarky or anything--very British.

For those in the radio listening area, the Esential 80's radio show will air in advance of the BB King's show, as a method of promotion. The show will run Thursday night (technically, Friday morning) from Midnight to 2AM and Saturday night from 10PM to Midnight on Long Island's 90.3FM.
