SONGS THAT COULD PROMOTE A PRODUCT

What song do you think could be used in an advertisement to promote a product or issue. Like for instance........

The Book I Read (Talking Heads)...The Local Library
Golden Brown (The Stranglers)... Crumpets
I Dream Of Wires (Gary Numan)...Telephones
Burn It Down (Dexy's Midnight Runners)...Bic / Zippo Lighters
Do Ya Like Sctratchin'( Malcolm McLaren)...Skin Cream

I recently heard I Want Candy used to promote new Reese's Cookies. The lyrics, however, were changed to "I Want Cookies" and "I Want Reese's". -- now that is pretty bad, especially when a song like I want candy could actually be used by a company to promote... CANDY!

Note that the trend is, no matter what the song's actually about, if the title's okay, they just cut out the rest of the lyrics. Most egregiously, Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life"'s use in Carnival Cruise Lines' commercials neatly sidesteps the more decadent details, though I'd bet "Hey man, where'd you get that lotion?" may often be heard spoken somewhere on the ships...

I'd count Target's "Beautiful World" commercial among those, except Devo members actually produced the commercial, and thus got away with a *very* wry and cynical statement. (Devo's diaspora do that sort of production nowadays - for instance, didja know Bob Casale did the video for Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby's Got Back"? And now that you know that, doesn't it make sense?)

So with no-matter-what-the-context usage in mind:

Burning Down The House (Talking Heads) - Firemans' Fund Insurance
Let's Go To Bed (The Cure) - Dux Beds
Head Like A Hole (Nine Inch Nails) - Band-Aids
How Soon Is Now (The Smiths) - Timex
Penthouse & Pavement (Heaven 17) - The Trump Organization
Absolute Beginners (The Jam) - Noggin
Holiday In Cambodia (Dead Kennedys) - Cambodian Tourist Board
The Motion of Love (Gene Loves Jezebel) - K-Y® Brand Warming Ultragel (<a href="http://k-y.com/sample_buffer.jsp">Free Sample! No, I'm not kidding...</a>)

(Come to think of it, maybe "Lust For Life" is appropriate for that last one...)

I'm not entirely sure the Internet's framers considered the role of Warming Ultragel in their protocol deliberations, but there it is...
