Kind of a personal question I guess, and one that you can answer in many different ways....

What song do you picture when you think of the best things in your life?

It doesn't necessarily have to depict what your life is like now, though it could. It could also be how you envision it turning out or what you want to strive for. So which song, when it comes on, gives you that charge, picks you up, or makes you idealistically revel in or hope for the best things in life?


For me right now, it's New Order's (surprise) Regret, with lyrics which are ironically about not having regrets, a great [i]carpe deum[/i] song. It's punctuated by some great snippets:

"Maybe I've forgotten, the name and the address, of every one I've ever known, but it's nothing I regret. Save it for another day..."

"Wake up every day, that would a start. I would not complain of my wounded heart."

"You may think that I'm out of hand, that I'm naive, I understand. On this occasion it's not true..."

I love the ending, a warning of what not to become...

" 'Just wait 'til tomorrow', I guess that's what they all say, just before they fall apart."

I hear it and it gets me jacked up for the day ahead!

It's not the lyrics, really. I heard it way back in the early 80s when I didn't know English. Those were happy times. If I were Marcel Proust, I could describe the wonderful feelings of nostalgia that song brings in me[:)]

Of course, I may have to stick to New Order. At least for now. Tomorrow I'll have another song, lol [;)]

But I have to say that every time I hear New Order's All The Way off the Technique album, I almost get like this feeling of exaltation. I swear, I could have written those lyrics myself. My entire life - and I literally mean as long as I can remember - I always knew that I would do something very different than all those around me and what was expected of me. To me, this song is about escaping the trap of one's upbringing and societal environ whilst (BSP word [;)] ) facing a certain amount of adversity and the sweet, sweet satisfaction of having fulfilled your true destiny. Becoming an artist was imprinted in my brain at a very young age and this song makes me feel SO glad I followed through. Of course my interpretation of the song is a bit different than it's intended meaning I think [:p]

This used to reflect me when I was in my teens:

(forgive me for repeating this on every single lyric thread)

For me, the song was about feeling like the most un-extraordinary person in the world but knowing deep inside, something was dying to get out. As teen, I felt trapped, but I couldn't explain how. Somehow this song got me through some typically angsty teen moments for me.

Talk Talk "It's My Life"

The song I would choose would be Depeche Mode's "But Not Tonight".
"And I haven't felt so alive in years/The moon is shining in the sky/Reminding me of so many other nights/When my eyes have been so red/I've been mistaken for dead/But not tonight..."

Dave - You're RIGHT ON. "This is the Day" is the song I've always been able to relate to better than anything else I heard.

Also The The's "Kingdom of Rain" is a succint description of how my marriage collapsed.

Bummer Jeff. It always struck me that "you were the boy I wanted to cry with...you were the boy I wanted to die with" was a killer line about all-consuming passion.

This is a more recent song, but it captures how I've felt in the best of times.
