New Wave Outpost Forum

I'm off to Toronto for the weekend and was wondering what suggestions NWO might offer for good record stores. I am very familiar with the Yonge Street strip, with HMV, ?Sidewalk Sam etc around Eaton Centre. I'm also aware that there are a number of small stores all along Yonge Street, north of Carleton. Queen Street W has some stores west of Bay that I've been to. Anything else specifically? Eight6, Human Clone etc etc???

ps Also the best strip clubs[:D][:D][:D]

Sam The Record Man is the best record store in the world. I think there's records. I didn't check em, being still in my CD phase when i went there. Blew quite a bit of dough on hard-to-finds. I went to a smaller used cD store who's name I can't remember, but the employee working there was somehow related to Martha Johnson of MATM.

After that, go down further on Yonge street to Club Zanzibar and enjoy the lax laws.

I loved my Toronto trip. So much stuff to do on just one street!

Sam the record Man on Yonge is what I meant (I think). Been to Z-Bar...much prefer the Brass Rail[:D][:D][:D][:D]

I'd love to help, but the truth of the matter is that I haven't been in a record store here (or anywhere for that matter) in years.

Last time I was in one was when Peter Dunn's Vinyl Museum was still around. What a goldmine that place was!

Besides the ones already mentioned, a couple that I know of are [b]Rotate This is at 620 Queen St. W. (west of Yonge St.)[/b] and [b]Discovery Records, 1140 Queen St. E. (Beaches area, east of Yonge St.)[/b]. Discovery has a web site so you can "preshop" the store: http://www.discoveryrecords.com/ Jim will hold items for a couple of days if you see something you like.

Honestly though, between GEMM, Musicstack, eBay and the internet in general, I buy more online now than I ever did when I actually went to the stores.

I've only made it to the HMV and Sam The Record Man on Yonge Street, but both are great stores. I was there in July and bought a ton of cool stuff...gotta love the weak Canadian dollar!

Simple Minds - DVD-Audio versions of New Gold Dream and Once Upon A Time. Both albums are in 5.1; NGD features an unreleased song ("In Every Heaven," which is basically the song "Soundtrack For Every Heaven" with vocals) and an extended version of "Hunter And The Hunted."

I haven't been to Sam's for a couple of years since moving to Texas, but I think that they don't have records in the store anymore. They used to have them upstairs and nothing too exciting either. I used to work for them when they were a cross Canada chain, and when we opened the store in Hamilton, I scored tons of new wave records before we opened. The owner's son Jason, who owns the company now, asked me what records I was pulling out from the boxes and when I told him that they were new wave records, he told me he was the keyboard player in Blue Peter. That I already knew, but we at least talked a bit about those days. Good luck on your record hunt.

Actually, old geezer that I am, for me records means cds as well.

Old geezer?! I actually asked someone today "Why don't you just mail order it?" Then I literally laughed out loud when I realized what I said. "Mail order"?!!! Does anybody say that anymore??? LOL.

Hey Mike:

Sonic Boom at Bloor and Bathurst has new and tons of used cds, really good selection. There are few other used places along Bloor (walking towards Yonge).

The Brass Rail is your best bet [}:)]

Thanks Dan (and everyone else who responded). That's the store I believe you suggested ?1 year ago, but I had forgotten. I was going to ask you about concerts; I see that Anthrax and Judas Priest are playing this weekend, blecchh!
