I don't get it. It lacks some element that makes the songs special. No matter how good the cover maybe, I just can't get over how the original song sounded. Sometimes the covers are horrible (not just because of the vocals) but also because it lacks the feeling of that time. Example being Mandy Moore's Album "Coverage". Songs like "Senses Working Overtime" and "The Whole Of The Moon" should have never been done. I respect everyone who loves music and loves to make music but somethings should be left as is. What do you think?

Agreed. Instead of enriching and adding to the original, the covers by today's pop stars seem to strip them down into the current idiom of easily digestable, simply structured vanilla crap. It's like they made the decision based on what will sell rather than "boy, this inspired me when I a young musician and I'm now gonna celebrate this song." Do you ever sense this latter motivation in these songs?? Maybe in a couple of Moby's tracks, though I'm not particularly fond of those either. I like Stars' take of "This Charming Man", but 1) some find even that to be repeititve (I don't) and 2) it's not really by one these pop stars.

It's completely crazy. What are some people thinking? I love many, many songs but I would never dream of covering any of them because I respect the original so much.

I thought the soundtrack for "Not Another Teenage Movie" was quite good. The covers come off better when they aren't merely copies but the artists actually try to place them in their own genre. I also like the various string quartet, classical, piano based interpretations of some of my favorite artists.

I think that there are some good covers out there but it is still like there is something missing.....

I just heard an atrocious version of the Thompson Twin's "Hold Me Now" while in the super-market. Don't know who was singing it, but it was god-awful.[xx(]

Couldn't agree more by the way I'm at a lose right now...who originally did The Whole Of The Moon? That's one I'd forgotten till now.

Anyone catch that 311 cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven? That was one of the biggest atrocities of humankind.

As much as I love the Duranies, their cover album was fairly messed up[xx(] Their only good cover was of David Bowie's "Fame" way back in '82.

I know they had a hit with a very shitty version of Lovesong. Did they do Just Like Heaven too? A version of JLH I always liked was Dinosaur Jr.'s even though a lot of people absolutely hate it.

Wow, exrat, I just heard the 'Hold me now' cover in the dollar store tonight. I was thinking the same thing you were....

I wouldn't mind an inventive cover of a new wave song (it's exactly what Devo did with Satisfaction, pillaging the music of 20 years back)but these current covers are pretty tame, staying too close to the original. I'd rather just hear the original.

It's like these 18 year old female poptarts are being produced by a guy our age who is trying to feed music of his youth to her. It's kind of creepy to me.

It's the same creepy feeling I get when I see late 70's/early 80's punk/new wave t-shirts at 'Hot Topic' in the malls. How many of these kids REALLY know what that music is, what it actually means? It's being marketed to them by people OUR age.

No disrespect intended to someone younger who actually discovered and loves our music. I just don't think that person is seeking it out in the suburban malls.
