An Ode to Toad...

Toad the Wet Sprocket that is. Any other fans of this underappreciated Santa Babera troup? They should get tons of credit for carrying the melodic pop rock banner through the 90s when there was so much noise all around them. Freaking classic tracks like All I Want, Walk on the Ocean, Fall Down, Come Down, Crazy Love, etc. I would think that many new wavers would have appreciated their sound. True??

'All I Want' really hooked me with its' Peter Murphyish guitar and vocal stylings, ala 'Indigo Eyes' while Walk On The Ocean' had a distinct ELP flavor to it. Good call Blir [;)]

What I probably like most about them is that they got their name from Monty Python.[:o)]

I loved their sound from the minute I heard them. Ran off and bought the CD.
Speaking of their name, I found this rather amusing...

The sketch can be found on the Monty Python Contractual Obligation album, which the Pythons released in 1980. Eric Idle explained the origins back in 1996, "...initially it was for a Rutland Weekend Television [RTW] sketch, and then I recycled it into a Python bit on one of the records... Many years later I was driving down the freeway and nearly drove off the road when the DJ announced the name of the group!" Eric would later confide to the members of Toad that he originally thought of the name because he wanted "to think of a name so silly and unusual no one would ever consider it for a group."

Speaking of Python sketches, I fondly remember WLIR using them (and other hilarous audio clips) as segment segues and bumpers back in the early to mid 80's.
The aforementioned 'Toad The Wet Sprocket' racing recap bit was often used.

If you like these albums IHIGHLY fecommend PALE and BREAD and CIRCUS from Toad (their 1st two). These are even better than anyhting they did subsequently. PALE is one of my top 10 ever.
