New Wave Outpost Forum

As someone whose always looking here at NWO for bands I missed "back in the day" (a sincere thanks to Mike P for the song of the week and others who have posted new rips, etc here) and as someone who fully recognizes the stunning repository of NW knowledge here I thought I'd pose the following question:
As I'm sure you know on Amazon, they have a "people who bought_____ also bought____" section on their site. While the accuracy of their "picks" is sometimes in question, the idea is sound. Could/would the vets here do something like that for us (relative) newbies? Pick a more well known NW band and clue us into a more obscure band similar in sound/style/other? It may bust my music budget to catch up, but will be well worth it.

Foo Fighters - M83 - call me crazy but take Foo, speed it up, mix in funky, electro noise and voila, M83. Completely different yet somehow similar.

If you like Joy Division, you'll like pretty much anything on the 4AD label in the 80s & 90s, esp. Dead Can Dance, some Wolfgang Press, Cocteau Twins.
If you like Dead Can Dance, you'll like Danielle Dax.
If you like Danielle Dax, you'll like Anne Clark.
If you like Anne Clark, you'll like Yazoo & Depeche Mode.
If you like those 2, you'd like the Cure.
And if you like the Cure, you'll love the Psychedelic Furs!

I haven't heard much M83 but what I heard sounded a LOT like My Bloody Valentine. I didn't get the Foo Fighters thing from it really.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Jesus & Mary Chain --> Ravonettes. They sound like a ripoff from what I've heard of their stuff.

Oh yeah. I don't know who I'd compare them to really...I guess they are sort of a cross between a more synth-oriented Chrome and early LA punk stuff, but THE SCREAMERS are one of the great underrated bands. They never did officially record anything but boots of their demos and live shows surface from time to time.

With a great vocals, drums and two distorted synths setup, they were more punk than the bands who retained standard guitar-bass-drums setups and basically did sped up rock and roll.

Plus Tomata Du Plenty (RIP) was one of the great frontmen of all time. What a spastic. I cannot recommend highly enough the Target Video DVD of the Screamers or any recordings you can scrounge by 'em. They deserve more recognition than they have received.

A couple off the top of my head:

Duran Duran - Honest Mistake, The Bravery (Oh c'mon don't tell me they didn't just blatantly rip off "Planet Earth"!)

Yes, the Screamers are probably the greatest band to never release an official LP! There is a double disc of demos & live stuff out officially called "In A Better World", which is fantastic! Also a pretty good tribute came out a few years ago with lots of great bands on it. I believe the 77-78 demos are pretty easy to find on disc as well.
