It's All I Can Do - The Cars

I have the Candy-O CD, and it seems to me that the song "It's All I Can Do" has a lot of squeaks that don't belong there. The squeaks are prominent in the second half of the song, when they're repeating the chorus. The squeaks sound more like something in need of oil, rather than something deliberate by Eliot or Greg. But I'm no musician, so what do I know?

Anyway, I've heard the song (with squeaks) on the radio, so I know it's not that I have a faulty CD. So, I was wondering if the squeaks were present on the LP? Or maybe if the song was remastered on their anthology or other compilation?

I sounds to me like the sound that is created when a guitarist moves his or her fingers rapidly up and down the strings when changing chords.

Never paid any attention to it before; doesn't bother me; sounds normal to me.

BTW: love that song - probably one of my favorite Car's songs!

I've noticed the same thing on "Bye Bye Love". Concurring with red x red, I always chalked it up to Benjamin Orr's playing.

"It's All I Can Do" is my second favorite Cars song. I had it on auto-repeat this morning, and the squeaks were going to straight to my spine.[:D] My favorite Cars song is "Bye Bye Love". (No joke.) Never noticed 'em there.

Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Not to musically digress but I've always loved those signature sonic artifacts that come out in various guitar recordings (especially acoustic) case in point on this classic 70's rock track (@1:13-14)[8D]

I listened to their Anthology CD on the way to work this morning and didn't notice it. I listened to "It's All I Can Do" again on the way to lunch... definitely noticed it then! You guys have good ears.

I would prefer to blame it on Ric Ocasek. Ben Orr was too good looking.
it's the sound of fingers squeaking
on guitar strings or a sample or simulation of
fingers squeaking on guitar strings.
You need a real NW nerd to tell you
which one, because I score low on the nerd test.
This at one time was a no-no for
recording music, but it can also be used as an
effect/embellishment as you hear in this
song.
