So. I am sure this has been brought up here before and some of you longer-term members will raise an eyebrow, but among the NW bands that I really enjoy are Men Without Hats and A Flock of Seagulls (I have a fixation with Trio also).

Anyway, these bands seem to be looked down on even by a lot of NW fans. I can understand this. They were part of the MTV appropriation of NW's "underground" status and it could certainly be argued that these two bands had more gimmickry than substance.

But for me, their music means a lot. It's just fun and uplifting and interestingly made to me.

Wondered what the opinion was here in these parts on Men W/O Hats and AFOS.

And more importantly, whay can you not find Men w/o Hats Folk Music of the 80s or Rhythm of Youth on CD anywhere for under $50???

If anyone has any Men Without Hats to share, I would be forever indebted. All I have is the Rhythm of Youth album on vinyl and I haven't heard it in years and years. I've heard "Folk Music" and "Pop Goes the World" are good but I've never heard them.

Also, years ago I had another copy of the Rhythm of Youth album and it contained the song "Living in China", but the copy I have now does not include it. What's the deal?

At any rate, if anyone can help an ape out with any Men w/o Hats stuff in digital form, it sure would be a nice blast from the past...

Maybe this should've gone in the Mp3 request thread, but I didn't really mean for it to head in this direction....

I like both Men Without Hats and A Flock of Seagulls. Never really thought that these two were looked down upon by other New Wave fans. It's more the people who weren't really into these groups that look down on them (well, moreso Flock because of the hair). I'm sure Men were considered one hit wonders so nobody really paid much attention.

I love bogth bands, especially Mw/oH. If you can get past the Safety Dance there are some really excellent songs on Rhythm Of Youth. Antartica is great, Living In China is my favorite.

AFOS lost me after the second LP, but those early singles and the first 2 albums are really good records.

Yeah I agree! I got a bit burned out by Safety Dance but Rhythm of Youth has some very catchy, nice little ditties on it. Hardly a day goes by that my mind doesn't shout "Ant-arc-tic-AHHH!" to itself repeatedly. I Got the Message is real cool too.

You got any opinion on Folk Music of the 80s or Pop Goes the World? I think I should track those down.

Also, I'm not familiar with AFOS after the Listen album. I hear Story of a Young Heart is really good though. I'd like to try it. There's a place in town that I think has it on vinyl for a buck, though it will be some time before I could listen to or rip it..

yes, sometimes these 2 bands get some short shrift by many, but I'm not sure that that is by serious New Wave fans like you'll find here.[8D] In fact, you'll find a serious helping of love for these bands on this NWO. Other, more casual fans may dismiss them as one-hit wonders, and the MTV-involvement which you brought up undoubtedly plays a huge factor. But past the usual hit by each band that gets undlessly played on the "80s" stations, there are amazing, dark, and intricate music by each throughout their earlier albums.

(I like "I Like" by MWHats the best!)

Men Without Hats is a good band but may be they don't have too many good songs to qualify in my top 25.My favorite track is I Got The Message. I have 2 CD's of this band: The Collection, 14 tracks with the dance version of I Got The Message and the extended version of Where Do The Boys Go and The Very Best, 16 tracks that I bought a few months ago in Tower for about $12.Rhythm of Youth and Folk of the 80s Part 3 was indeed released on one CD but it seems without the authorization of the band. Due to licensing issues this CD was supposed to have been removed from the market but there are still copies available for $30.
IMO A Flock of Seagulls better captures the New Wave essence. My favorite tracks are: The More You Live, The More You Love, Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You),Space Age Love Songs, I Ran, Telecommunication, Who's That Girl, DNA, Transfer Affection, Nightmares etc, etc too many to mention. I have 3 CD's: Self-titled, The Best Of and Listen, I might add Platinum soon eheheh

Can you post Men Without Hats - Where Do the Boys Go (Extended)? I leeched some crappy version from the internet and I think it has clicks in it (who obviously didn't use Exact Audio Copy). I have the Canadian Best of CD (Greatest Hats) but the tracklisting is a bit different and doesn't have this version.

I ordered A Flock - Listen remastered from Amazon but it is taking forever because of some other stuff I ordered.

I oculdn't open the original rar file that Rubbeet was kind enough to send, but I went to some Windows download site and got a player for it...haven't listened yet but all the files look extracted, etc. I'm sure it'll be fine, though it gave all my zipped folders the rar icon thingie in my music folder..

But yes! I'd love to hear Pop Goes the World! Thankyou and send requests.

OBS-- the Listen reissue is great but I wish it had bonus cuts...b-sides and such.

Here's what you should do to extract the full album (If you still haven't):

1) After downloading, double-click the .rar file.

2) It will prompt you to register or purchase but you can just close it then highlight the folder at the bottom which states the "name of the album" (don't open/double-click it)

3) At the top of that window, you will see the options for "Add", "Extract To", "Test", "View", etc. Click "EXTRACT TO" and it will display your directory on the right side such as "Desktop", "My Documents", "My Computer"- so choose wherever you want to save the file and click "OK".

Now, the files will start getting saved there, and that's it. When finished, you can find the full album (in regular format) where you saved it.

I think it's better to use .zip next time as it's more compatible with people (think WinXP has built-in .zip support and it's probably friendlier with other OSes). Archive compression isn't an issue here since MP3s are already compressed. Usually I do prefer RAR though.
