What the heck is the fascination with these guys? Ever hear a song you didn't know but could instantly tell who sang it...BINGO...TALKING HEADS! The B-52's fall into this category as well but I will leave that rant for another day. I can't stand that dude's voice.....it feels like root canal surgery to my ears. Burning Down the House....I only wish they were all in the house while it burned! I can honestly say I do not own one piece of vinyl, caseete or CD that includes these dribling idiots! Is David Byrne such a visionary? Ever get his solo records? Don't...you stand a better chance of surviving the bird flu than living through one of his LPs. The guy had this crazy memorable (yet grating) voice that people knew so that every song sounded the same and therefore was safe. Are we to bow because these guys/gals happened to release a few albums that had marginal air play? Next you will be telling me that Joe Jackson was great as well......

You really have to listen to the records. If you couldn't stand Byrne's vocals then I can see being turned off and you may never like them. But I'm telling you, the Talking Heads were constantly evolving their sound - rarely repeated themselves or 'sounded the same'.

I was always kind of a wishy-washy fan back then, but now each time I put on one of their records I hear new layers of inventiveness and good songs. I encourage you to really give albums like 'Remain in Light' and 'Fear of Music' another chance. If you've never heard Byrne and Eno's "My life in the bush of ghosts" you might find that interesting as well - - no Byrne vocals!!

And by the way: the 1st three Joe Jackson lps really aren't as crappy as you might think they are!!!!

I've never really been that big of a Talking Heads fan either. There are a few early records that I think are OK, but most of their radio stuff just gets on my nerves. I always found them to be overrated.

I think the fascination with them was that they were the artsy intellectual sof the CBGB bunch, but musically I have never really been into them either and I do agree that they are perhaps overrated, but I would never say that they "suck."

Well I'm a fan of Talking Heads -- the double cd "Sand In The Vaseline" is an excellent collection of some of their best work. Even with the 34 songs from that double cd, I have 39 Talking Heads tracks in my mp3 player that I love,

David Byrne's solo work is much sketchier, however his 1997 cd "Feelings" has 5 songs that I love: A Soft Seduction, Dance on Vaseline, Amnesia, Finite - Alright, and They Are In Love -- all excellent songs -- give them a listen.

It's funny how we have such differing opinions. I would say that they weren't overrated - I really do think they were innovative & truly were artists, and deserve the critical recognition.

With that said, I can't really stand to listen to them either.

I think 3 songs are brilliant - Psycho Killer, Naive Melody and Life During Wartime, but other than that - fugeddabout it.

This isn't even worth responding to. But I am fascinated by the complete lack of any sense of context in these posts.

Did Talking Heads have some sort of deal with the makers of Vaseline? I'll add my 2 cents on this: I liked a few of their songs with Drugs being my favorite, but I could never get my head around the lofty stature and recognition they seemed to enjoy. Still, I have a couple of their lp's (the first few I think)
