Just popped into my head while listening to River Detectives just now. The vocalist sure sounds like Glenn Philips of Toad the Wet Sprocket.

So, aside from the many Dave Gahan sound-alikes particularly those German synthpop bands, who else comes to mind?

Abacab reminded me how The Essence are dead ringers for The Cure. He's prolly sick of hearing me talk about it, but "The Cat" is a great song that old Bobby could easily have done.

Andy Bell with Erasure also does a pretty good impersonation of Alison Moyette. Hmmm, did Vince Clark just dump her for the male version?!

Tori Amos = Kate Bush
Kate Bush = Tori Amos

Yeps, there is a little resemblance but I find the voice of Glen Phillips a bit rasp compared to Sam Corry's voice which is more melodious, I love Chains and Love's Like A Needle.

Talking about German synthpop bands, I find De/vision to be a pale copy of DM but I will buy one of their albums one of these days.

Andy Bell & Alison Moyet? Tee Hee! Personally, I found there were times that Ms. Moyet sounded (and looked) more like man than Andy.

Agree that Mr. Philips' voice is more raspy. I guess the similarity there is that they both sounded like they've got colds.

David Sylvian of Japan sounds like he spent his adolescence locked in his room listening to nothing but Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry records.

If you guys think Cause & Effect, De/Vision, and Red Flag sound like DM, you should check out Joy Machine, an indie synthpop band from the late '90s that sounds almost EXACTLY like them. I've got four songs by them that I downloaded from MP3.com back when you could actually find offbeat stuff on there for free:

The best track is I Know You, which sounds better than most stuff from DM after 1990! Anyone else here heard of Joy Machine? I did a search for them on Google just now, but couldn't turn up a single reference...I wonder if they're still around?

Edit: I've posted I Know You on the mp3 trading forum. Check it out, it's a really great song. If there's interest in more, I'll post the other three tracks I have.
