I could swear that half the CRAP my kids listen to are knockoffs of our classics. This new S.O.S. song that the kids (heh, "you kids!") are listening to nothing but a heavily resampled Soft Cell Tainted Love. They're always so surprised when they find out it's not an original. Like, as if!

...and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Only difference this time, is with the sampling and dissection of the old songs, instead of somewhat faithful cover versions, today's "artists"(*) can take credit for creating "original" songs. With this kind of deceit prevelant in the music industry today, its no big surprise that kids today are clueless about their favorite songs true origins.

Blir, if you want to give your kids a music history lesson, have them listen to some Rank Sinatra. That'll learn them.[:D]

I've been listening to a lot of old disco lately, and I'm astounded at how it has been cannibalized by modern genres of dance music (trance, techno, house, etc.) and hip hop. It's beyond just samples - but almost whole songs with simply the vocals removed & a souped up beat added. I appreciate that there are people out there with an affection for the older stuff, and a good knowledge of it - but jeez - aren't there any original ideas anymore?

I heard this before, back in the late 80's when my dad was pissed after hearing the Pet Shop Boys version of Elvis' "Always on my mind".[:D]

Heard this one today...it was really bad rip off.

Only good thing is my younger niece went right to my music library, and uploaded the original to her ipod!

nothing wrong with a little sampling...Soft Cell wasn't original either [:D]

I enjoy some recent original songs by her as well, like Only Girl and S&M... very overplayed songs, but I dig the electro-house vibe on those , fun to listen to [:D]

Oh, it only gets more complicated. The new Chris Brown song samples the SWV song "Right Here" from the 90s that samples Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" from the 80s... I can't wait for someone to sample Ice Ice Baby...

They couldn't listen to Fleet Foxes in 2006. I'm sure the kids have jumped on the bandwagon and grown full beards by now.

Rihanna's album Loud was actually pulled from iTunes for a while, I think due to an illegal/uncredited sample of Enya in her song "Fading". I think later song was edited to remove the sample [:D]
