I totally agree with Edisonoside & kola.
What strikes me comparing those charts to the ones today is the diversity of musical styles in the 80's charts - new wave, pop, country, R&B, disco, rock, etc. I don't pay attention to the charts now days, but I suspect that diversity is gone.

I guess Billboard is a horror show in general. If you thought it was [b]ALL[/b] good then and it ALL sucks now, the difference isn't taste but just old age. There is selectivity for chrissakes, otherwise we'd be paying 15 bucks a pound for ground beef as well as filet mignon.

That is a pretty sad Top 20 but (and this is only a guess) it can't be that bad every week, can it? At least I can say I do like some Kanye songs, some Black-Eyed Peas, Jamie Foxx was great in the movie "Ray", and Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" was actually a decent song. There's no excuse for Nickelback though. [xx(]

That current Top 20 is an awful collection of detritus waiting for somebody good ( and talented) to come along and open a can of whoop-a** on it. OK, OK, Blir is right--must be our old age. To us, it's crap. But geez---I don't know ANYONE on that list besides Mariah Scarey and Black Eyed Peas. Is that Jamie Foxx the actor ? Is Kanye the guy who said GWB doesn't like black people ? ooog, I'm so out of it...I knew I had a safe retreat in the 80's. Now that I think about it, Grunch and everyone else is right...even the Top 100 from the 80s harbors much better and creative stuff than this &%#*(@(!

The real horror is that I think there's only one future classic in the current Top 20: "Dirty Little Secret." It certainly earned its birth in the Top 10 since it took seemingly forever to get there. I mean, it came out in, what, August?
I've liked other singles from Mariah Carey, the Pussycat Dolls, Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and Nickelback, but not these; that "Run It" song is just about the worst noise pollution I've ever heard; and Fall Out Boy is absolutely unbearable.
I think the fact that the Black Eyed Peas' label's choice for a second single, "Don't Lie" (which wasn't bad and which had an expensive and engaging video), fell off the charts quickly, while "My Humps," a truly wretched song, flew right past it at a time when it hadn't a video -- and hadn't even gone for adds -- sums up everything that's wrong with radio right now.

Excellent point. And "My Humps" along with that new Kevin Federline(Mr. Britney) *song* "Popozao" have got to both be in the top 10 all-time for worst songs ever released.

Jamie Foxx is the actor and he's actually a pretty good singer. BUT .... the choice of material is absolute rap/r+b crossover paint by numbers shit.

I agree with you WS. Looking at the recent top 20 posted the vast majority of it looks to be hip-hop oriented. No country (not that I would like it) No hard rock (does Fall out Boy count as "alternative" these days or not..?). No "alternative" really. Perhaps there are sub-genres of hip-hop that make it distinctive to avid listeners, but (primarily because of my old age, I'll admit) it sounds pretty much the same to me. I may not like a lot of the music that was "top 40" back then, but it least it was in different genres. BTW this is the reason I usually avoid "80s nights" at clubs in my area. I've already heard enough MJ and Madonna to last a lifetime.[;)]
