I can't believe I'm the first to suggest this as a great NO tune:

"Sunrise" from Low-life.

I've always thought it captured a certain energy that is sometimes missing from their more electronic songs. Then again, someone posted on Amazon that people have not liked it ("guitar is too heavy"). Oh well.

Of course I like the other stuff mentioned on the thread, but something about the buildup of anger in "Sunrise" gets me tapping my fingers at the start of the song and pounding my fist on the table/dashboard/whatever at about the 5:00 mark...

I am going to mention one of the Waiting for... songs that I think is great: Morning Night And Day. It has certain energy.. it makes you wanna party.
I also like "Who's Joe?" from waiting.... excellent album!!

They all make me wanna party. Morning, Joe, Hey Now, Krafty (especially when the drums kick in at the chorus), Guilt, and especially Turn, a real gem with all the New Order signature sounds. Even Barny's admittedly just-passable voice shines in that last one, especially the "Daaaays turn into months and years, I can't forget that you were here...." line.

You have a very good point there, Blir. All songs from Waiting.. make want to sing and dance. That is what makes it a great album, all the songs stick in your head immediately. The second time I listened to it, I could remember all the lyrics... that doesn't always happen.

PS: I think that one of these days I'm gonna die of a heart attack while dancing Blue Monday... I can't control myself every time I listen to it. That's the magic of No! [:)]

My favourite JD song has to be Atmosphere. It's kind of uplifting sounding even with the depressing style vocals.

I think the first thing you should get is the NewOrderStory DVD (New Order Item). It is an outstanding 2h+ documentary that I'm glad was finally released as DVD. As a bonus, you get a DVD of the New Order promo videos as well [;)]. The two disc set is priced like a single disc release in North America.

IMO Sunrise is a good song, it has some gothic flavor and is reminiscent of Joy Division but is it really representative of NO? I think that when someone not familiar with a band requests for a little guidance we should set aside our subjectivity to give an objective advice independently of our own liking.....


To clarify matters, I would add this.
Is Sunrise a good song? Yes it is, actually I like it very much.
Is Low Life a good album? Yes indeed, may be not the best but close.

The point that I raised was the following:
When a newbie interested in a band requests for guidance, should we recommend that obscure demo that we particularly like or the songs that the majority of fans like? ..... which usually happen to be the best anyway.

I guess it's a common mistake to think that there is no objectivity in music. There are parameters in terms of creativity, melody, rhythm, vocals etc. It's a skill which can be developed....Some dudes will never get it.
