I TOTALLY thought of both the Cocteau Twins AND the Smiths when I opened this thread! The Cocteaux' album covers were completely recognizable. Even when they had to be shrunk down for cassettes---then, they would simply have a long-ass fold-out sleeve!

I think of Talking Heads, OMD and Buzzcocks (Buzzcocks had probably the most "graphic designy" approach to album art of any punk and new wave band).

Without comeptition, it's Nina Hagen. Nunsexmonkrock, Fearless, and In Ekstasy are brilliant with presenting the idea of beauty thought completely unique eyes--and all come off authentically beautiful. Even her later packages are fully realized artistic ideas. Street is exactly what Disney might look like on Mars and Revolution Ballroom is perfect the way her dominatrix character is juxtaposed against a domestic setting (albeit with politely pink padded walls). She's a master in reflecting the music inside the sleeve with what's on the sleeve, and her uses of detail and color are undaunted. Even when she's being minimal ('89's S/T album and 2000's Return Of The Mother), you still want to look at the picture just a little bit longer.

Among my favorite bands and one's I can actually remember all the album covers, I'll say X. They always had a homebrew patchwork feel to them with that "X" prominently displayed on each one.

I saw it the other day and I'd say that Echo And The Bunnymen's "Porcupine" cover is really beautiful.

All of the Bunnymen albums are stunning in their photography. My personal favorite is Porcupine, but that probably comes from living in Minnesota where we have lots of ice and snow.
