I was thinking in which music could accompany the vibe that I get of the town in which I live in... and I wanted to know what the rest of the newwaveoutposters have to say about the subject (the music that goes with your town-city).
I live in a small town called Del Viso... that has like a melancholic vibe. And it sort of reminds me of the places that Morrisey described in The Smiths' songs... Songs like Heaven knows I'm miserable now or like Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before describe so well a traditional town in which the days can be boring and life can be hard sometimes for a confused soul.

Well, I'm a anomoly in my town, so new wave music isn't the first thing that comes to mind in describing my home base's vibe. When I was living in Germany, I was listening to a lot of German new wave, and aquired my love for all things Kraftwerk, La Dusseldorf, etc. The musical vibe my former home in Arizona was very mexican based, as most of what I listened to at that time was spanish radio. For my current neck of the woods, southern rock and classic country (Buck Owens, George Jones, etc.) comes to mind more than anything else. I wish my home base would inspire a more new wave feel, but oh well. At least my stores (at least when I'm on the premises) have a very new wave feel, as that's what I'll be playing, much to my employees annoyance.[:D]

I don't think they make music that would fit my hometown. If they did, it would sound like trash can lids banging together, yoko ono on vocals, fiddles, rakes across chalkboards, the sound of car brakes, and a REO Speedwagon sample thrown in for good measure.

Oh wait they do make that kind of music... what's it called Motors? Controlled Bleeding? Yes - that's it!

Ouch Wolv, what a description!

Phish would happily provide the soundtrack to my city. I'm not particularly a fan of Phish, although they don't bother me, either. This is a real granola, hippie & coffeeshop-infested type of place; however, being in the SouthWest, we've got an equally strong Mexican influence, so there'd be a healthy dose of Spanish music on the side. Just north of us are Santa Fe and Taos, arching their backs to be oh-so-liberal and hip, so you'd need some self-righteous music such as Alanis MoreUpset or Fiona Apple or Sarah McLaughlin to fit that musical landscape!

From a review I saw on Amazon:

'Kerosene'. Kicking off with an intro sounding more like oil drums being clattered than a guitar, the riff steadily climbs over a loping drum loop before crashing into the heaviest moment EVER, with Big Black sounding more like scrap iron in a metal crusher than a rock 'n'roll band. Albini's bleak vision of small town boredom and despair bides time before the next squalling explosion, until after about six minutes the song collapses in a serrated crash of ear splitting noise. Perfection.

I'll check it out Motors. Even though I make fun of Controlled Bleeding, I appreciate being exposed to it and was pretty intrigued about the genre.

I suppose if I'm being serious, my town isn't bad. After all, I chose to live here. I'll go with an old song from Chic "Est-ce que C'est Chic". The lyrics translate to "Is this chic or is it simply ordinary?" It's about wanting to be something that you're not, and never being satisfied with who you truly are.

That describes Syracuse pretty well - lots of big ideas (let's re-open the Erie canal! Let's build the largest mall in the country!) which of course, always fall through. I'm happy to be in a little suburban city where I easily have access to whatever I need. I don't need a mega-mall with indoor amusement park to make me happy.

Of course the residents of this town would probably pick a song from Styx, Journey or *gag* Benny Mardones.

Granite City, Illinois is the home of Granite City Steel (now owned by U.S. Steel) Parts of town are depressingly run down and, lets face it folks, kinda shitty. (If you have seen the movie "All The Right Moves" starring Tom Cruise and Craig T. Nelson, then you have an idea of what it's like here...minus the hills of course) Most of the people here are VERY nice, but there is a fair share of white crackhead trailer trash too. Anyway, one of my favorite songs of all time is "Steeltown" by Big Country:

I live in a university enclave near La Jolla. These past two weeks, there have been two suicides on campus, which amount to 4 or 5 in the past two years. UC San Diego is not well known for its cheerful atmosphere in spite of being minutes away from the ocean, being on primo location, and having great weather year-round. It's very business-minded with science and engineering. With that in mind, I have a full set of songs. It could probably be a whole Japan album!

This isn't about the town where I live now in Maine. This song is how I feel about my hometown in Wisconsin, an average redneck, whitebread town in the middle of farmland, that I couldn't wait to leave. In fact, I moved out the day I graduated from high school. Good riddance. My parents sometimes ask me if I'll ever move back there. I tell them "hell no". Whenever I go back to visit my family I sing the chorus from this song really loud, to myself, of course.
