Sonic Youth are taking inspiration from Seventies rock dinosaurs on their upcoming new album.

Tracks for the follow-up to 2004's 'Sonic Nurse' , out in June, sound like Blue Oyster Cult, according to Sonic Youth mainman Thurston Moore.

The star says that 'Lights Out', 'The Neutral', 'Rats' and 'Turquoise Boys' take their inspiration from the band who scored a huge worldwide hit in 1978 with 'Don't Fear The Reaper'. "Like their third, fourth album," he admitted.

Moore also disclosed to Rolling Stone that the track 'What A Waste' sounds like the 'Friends' theme tune, 'I'll Be There For You' by The Rembrandts.

He commented: "What was that band - The Rembrandts? We're inspired by that! And 'Freaks And Geeks', which is totally awesome and also early, thrash-era Go-Gos."

The band plan to tour the US later this year with The Flaming Lips, whose new album 'At War With The Mystics' is out on April 3.

"We like each other," Moore revealed. "We've played together - but it's always at some festival in Brazil or something. So we thought we should really cut across the US together."

This rates a major WTF????? I had to double check the calendar to make sure it wasn't April Fool's Day.

I have the utmost faith in them though. If anyone can make a great record out of something so ridiculous, it's Sonic Youth.

There has'nt been a "silly" Thurston Moore project in a long long time so I'm psyched.
