...something that you just don't hear talked about enough. Nothing too common but not necessarily ridiculously obscure either. Maybe you used to hear it back in the day but now it's inexplicably forgotten by most.

I'll start with Killing Joke's "Follow the Leaders". When I first heard it on KROQ, I remember thinking it must have been a great new track by Adam and the Ants. It's far superior to their all-too-common "Eighties" and has a great creative construction, crunchy heavy drums, kiler bass line, and defiant energetic vocals. A classic IMHO from 1981's "what's THIS for...!":

"Maxx Axe" by Roger Troutman (ZAPP, ROGER, Human Body). Fun and funky jam that few folks have heard, but it's not too hard to find. "The Many Facets of Roger" is still available on CD (as far as I know). Great stuff.(Don't let the goofy cover fool you - it's amazing stuff for the most part). I'll throw a vinyl rip on here, hopefully the Record Company God's won't look too poorly on me. If you like this song, you really should look into Roger's work.

Cherry Vanilla never gets much recognition for her role in punk's early days, or her participation in the old early to mid-70's Max's Kansas City scene. She put out two lps in the late 70's, which have really grown on me. I ordered a double cd of the albums from her website & she even autographed the cover for me!

This track - Amanda, has a real Blondie sound to it. It's from her Venus D'vinyl album. The original cover had her decapitated head on a turn table watching the stylus draw ever closer. It was censored for a more generic cover of her on a motorcycle.

Hey DjFredVal, if you're interested, I have Roger Troutmans's first album, it was a regional release, and never issued on cassette or cd (I scored it from Roger himself, it was still in the shrink wrap!). It's not as tight as his later work (More Bounce, Do Wah Ditty, etc.) but a good listen anyhoo. Let me know if you want me to share the love. Now that I think of it, I should post the album in it's entirety on my blog. The sleeve has no copyright notice, and Warner Brother's only released two of the songs off of it on a compilation. And I doubt that Roger Troutman would mind (he was actually a little embarrassed by it. Don't know why. It sounded good.) Useless trivia: Q: Guess who designed Zapp's touring brochures and posters during Roger's last set of shows? A: Me! My lucky ass was at the right place at the right time, and I got to know that incredible talented man, if only a little bit. I need to see if I can dig up some of those old posters.
