The thing about profanity is that when you use it a lot it becomes part of your speech like like, totally or dude and it can pop out at the wrong time. I was in a very posh golf shop, the kind where a cotton golf shirt costs $150. The very well dressed sales woman is making her pitch to another customer and getting more enthusiastic as she talks and she sums up, ” what can I say they're frigging awesome"
She slapped her hands over her mouth apologized and everyone laughed, a lot, but I can imagine it going very differently.

I love profanity, when used correctly and in the appropriate context. On this site I will usually substitute $^#%$ in the name of discretion. Unfortunately, most people use profanity as a substitute for a good vocabulary.

KYYX, I understand why you wouldn't enjoy hearing it from your students, but it seems like an English teacher would appreciate the occasional Anglo-Saxon Chaucerism! [:D] I sure do!

P.S. Paris Hilton notwithstanding, I love "bitch."

I have a mouth like a sewer, but I constantly judge my audience.

When I'm at a bar with friends, I curse. When I'm hanging out with my kids, I don't. When I'm being naughty, I talk naughty [}:)] When I'm at work, I keep it clean.

Other people's cursing doesn't bother me unless they say certain words (taking God's name in vain). That makes me cringe.

Yesterday, I was on the phone with a lady I'd never met before. I am going to be designing her advertising. She was cursing left and right and while it didn't offend me, all I could think of was how completely unprofessional she was being.
