I think illegal immigrants strain society by using all of our public services (sewage, sanitation hospital, transportation, water, etc.) by using and not contributing. Granted, in an ironic way, our society would come to a halt if they were all removed. Around here, they're mowing lawns, washing dishes in restaraunts, watching kids while parents are at work, etc. But the guest worker program seems like a good idea by making them accountable for their presence here, releiving security strains at borders and helping them whilst helping us.

Yes, it's pretty out of control. You want to immigrate to our country? Fine, you're welcome to it--come legally, nothing's stopping you. But being here illegally is just that--illegal. Why some of these folks think they have rights when they're not even citizens is beyond me. On the other hand, most of them work, and while they're making more money in their jobs than they might ever make back home, it's sad b/c they're not paying into soc. security, not paying taxes, and not paying for any kind of health care. Where a giant problem has emerged is in the hospitals and emergency rooms across the southwest, filled full of illegals who use the ER as their primary health care. The hospitals, who have policies wherein they can't refuse care regardless of a person's legal status, or ability to pay, are overwhelmed.[/i]

In retrospect, I surely didn't mean for that to come across as xenophobic or any of that crap. My own parents are immigrants (from Germany). I was just addressing the [b]illegal[/b] aspect of it.

Which brings me to a question: (forgive my naivete here) why cross illegally? Is is difficult to cross legally ? Why do these folks not go thru the Customs gates, like those of us who travel to Europe or other countries in the world ?[?]

Because it's not us babbling on about etiquette and eachother. Current events, political ones especially, is what always drew alot of us to this side of the board. Just trying to get some of that spirit back.

I agree with MArv on this. A guest worker program would be like a tryout. If you can hold a job and be responsble...pay taxes obey the law etc. Then maybe in a few years you can get the green card. We all came from somewhere else...unless one of you is Native American...and our ancestors worked hard etc. I think most of these people coming to work here are decent people...and it is important for America to attract and keep hard working people in all types of work....but still the guest worker program I believe serves everyone. Labor for less than desirable work, a tryour period to weed out the rif raf and the promise of getting some future hard working Americans.

i'm plains cree native american indian...i've dual nationality for the UK and Canada. I hate it when people say that they deserve the jobs as they "were here first"...i'm not saying you said that btw nero but lets face it, it's what a few people have "thunk"...if someone is willing to prove they've got the compentence to work in a higher paid job then why not let them come over for 3 months? as is the standard now...

We exploit their cheap, zero-benefits labor and they expliot our healthcare system, etc. It's a necessary tradeoff.

I have a friend who runs a small gardening business. He hires four illegal Mexican workers, pays them 60K a year.

And oh poo poo a team of Mexicans just showed up next door. I've been defending an oak tree on my property line since my new neighbor built his home up my ass seven years ago. It's exactly the wrong time of year to prune oaks. Saving any tree is an impossible job sooner or later someone is going to cut it down

Oh yeah 25 days of rain this month. Oh shit they are gonna knock on my door. Maybe they are just lost, maybe it's an anti tree hit squad.
