Gwen Stefani's "Cool"? What song is this?

Actually I've only heard that once before. Don't recall much about it other than me thinking "Oh, They covered Talk Talk".

Nothing personnal against her but I have a hard time with some of these Neo New Wave acts who cite Madness, Oingo Boingo and others as influences. Often times they have the look down but the sound is so corporate.
I have always found her vocal affectations kind of annoying though.

I think she's a little better on these more mid-tempo numbers like "Cool". I was in a record store the other day and they were playing something from No Doubt and it was god-awful...she was yelping and whooping like a bad impression of Lene Lovich...yeah, I know...No Doubt were around for nearly 20 years and the world loved them but they ever did a thing for me. I much prefer her solo track "Cool" to anything they've put out. I will say that Stefani is a better vocalist than the all-time-worst-my-god-how-can-people-put-up-with-that-sound Madonna. Madonna's singing (or screeching or howling) always sounded to me like the audio equivilant of urine.

I can't agree with you on the neo-new wave acts sounding "corporate". Actually I don't even know what that means...like "very commercial"? Maybe you could make an argument for The Killers, but Elkland, Pitty Sing and Stellastarr harken back to an 80's sound but are about as far away from being corporate as you can get. Actually, the more "corporate" side of Indie-Rock would be Death Cab For Cutie and Bright Eyes. It's that wispy-acoustic-coffeehouse sound "as heard on the O.C." that major labels are snapping up like hotcakes. Most of the neo-NW/NextWave/Blah acts mentioned on the Next Wave board are still on indie labels and get very little radio support.

Anyways, I would'nt lump Gwen Stefani in with that crowd because she's an old-timer at this point, but HER CD is VERY commercial. From the singles I've heard, it seems like every song is contrived to be a hit. Nothing wrong with that, after all, she's a pop star and nothing more, like Madonna or Hall and Oates or Leslie Gore or anyone else.

(No offence to Death Cab and Bright Eyes fans, they churn out some great stuff).

I just heard the song and saw the video for the 1st time. The intro and verses to me sounded like a complete lift of the bridge of Queen/Bowie's "Under Pressure". No Doubt about it (uncontrollable laughter).

She looks like she's going for a Marilyn Monroe look when she wears the dark blue top and shorts.

I really liked the video for this -- it was certainly a lot better than wild animals with animated doodles -- but the cover itself was just such a shame. (No pun intended.) For one, it didn't pack a fraction of the emotional power of the original. And for two, it was note-for-note. If you're going to cover something, at least find a way to rework it and bring something new to the table. Otherwise, what's the point?

Which is not to say that I didn't wish Limp Bizkit's cover of "Faith" had been note-for-note.

see, that's what's wrong with music today , it's all a rip-off of something from 10 to 20yrs. or more ago. artist today just don't have any talen or can't write for shit. i hate it when they use fancy names like, covers or sampeling. to me there is just one name for it, its called " J O C K I N G ". don't get me wrong i love gwen, it's just that i get so dammn mad when someone fuckin' steals someone-elses song. i blame it on rap, you know ever sience rap first came out back in the late 70's all it was a rip-off someone-elses back ground music with new lyrics. and like it goes monkey see, monkey do. i mean every freakin' thing that balck artist see to do, everyone seems to want to do. what ever happened to when artist wrote their own songs, played their own insturmens? i mean even playing the dammn keyboard, at least the beats were original. now in days any moron with a stupid song and a jocked beat can be a star. but anyways if someone could please think of who in the hell did this song , please let us know. and that's just my 2 cents, not 50 cent.
