I wasn't calling YOU a troll, Beatschool. And you're right, I do lean to the right. Again only because the Anarchy Party just can't seem to get organized enough to actually establish themselves.

I was just trying to preempt any potential retaliatory bashing from those who are sense of humor challenged. Sometimes Liberals (and others) get their panties in a wad when sarcasm (and/or logic) is used.

One other thing, I hope I don't "trash" Liberals. Just their way of thinking. I try not to get personal. If I have, I apologize.

Personal attacks are the last resort of those who either have no facts to base their point on, can't use logic or are inarticulate. Those are the trolls to which I was referring.

It seems like that would really piss folks off, but no, they'll chalk it up to partisanship and "Bush-hating" rather than focusing on the fact that we have inept leadership that refuses to focus on the real problem, instead making symbolic gestures like introducing a resolution that states that the National Anthem should only be sung in English. What fucking difference does that make? None. It is as retarded as that "Freedom Fries" bullshit. It is the act of intellectually bankrupt people that can con themselves into thinking they made real change when they just appeased the simpletons.

Every single person here, with the possible exception of our foreign members, contributes to this immigration problem because of our very real addiction to consumption in the USA. We shifted from a production-based economy to a consumer-based economy and now we pay the price for it. I'm in the minority here, and fine with it, in that I'm not up in arms about this and support the rights of immigrants, illegal or legal. I really believe that line about "All men are created equal", so sue me. I've been preaching for years that businesses own the majority of the responsibility for this problem with our willing buy-in. We want cheap shit. Businesses need cheap labor to make cheap shit and need the skids greased so they can get cheap labor. Politicians need money to get into and stay in office, so they kiss the asses of business and look the other way when it comes to real immigration reform. Meanwhile, we bitch and moan, yet still want cheap shit. The cycle starts over.

Real change will come when the consumers of the world, not just America, decide that their materialistic needs do not supercede the base needs of other folks (i.e. Third World countries). When we are willing, as a society, to sacrifice for the greater good, we will start to see the change that will eliminate these problems.

Hate to break it to you, but there's no such thing as the greater good. You'll be hard pressed to find a person who doesn't think about themselves first and foremost.

Globalization will only get worse as time goes on. The US/Europe aren't even the problem anymore. China + India are both creating a middle class that will consume 5-10 times what the US does. Talk to the Chinese about the "greater good". Mao said buy those Hondas!

very well-put, beatschool, and I agree. I wish more people understood this argument and were willing to actually try it out. That way, we might actually be able to effect real change.
It's a huge undertaking, though. There are many folks who look upon those who try to live simply, without many material goods, as weirdos. It would seem that many folks are perfectly content to live large. One example of this is all the recent squawking about high gas prices. Well, you know what ?(and I mean this as a general "you", not "you' specifically, beatschool) People are still driving their gas-guzzling SUVs and driving far and wide! the roads are still crowded ! Rush hour is as bad as ever. It's hard not to laugh as I bike past them all, backed up on the roads, idling their 8 or 12 mpg engines. Where's the outrage?

As idealistic as "greater good" sounds, I know it is possible to find people that are willing to sacrifice a good deal materially if it will ease the suffering of others. I am surrounded by people that give up material gains because their reward comes from the work that they do. One of my wife's oldest friends is a Stanford-trained lawyer that had multiple corporate law offers coming out of school in the $100-120,000 range. Instead, she chose to work as a legal advocate for the mentally impaired and she took a job that payed her in the $40,000 range. In the Bay Area, that is a choice between living on your own and being able to buy a home, or having roommates and living in a tiny apartment. Apparently she didn't learn the lesson because she is now working as a defense attorney doing final appeals for Death Row inmates. She has seen nearly every single one of her clients die, isn't getting rich from it, but she persists because she believes in the American judicial system and wants everyone to be able to take advantage of all the rights it affords. She and her husband, a salesman and Army reservist, struggle by, but both contribute in the way they are best able. He volunteered to re-up in the military because he believes in supporting his fellow soldier, not this fuckstorm of an administration. The guy jumps out of planes doing search and rescue when fellow soldiers get stranded or lost. He doesn't do this for the money or benefits either, ask around. They're getting fucked when it comes to compensation.

The greater good exists for many of us. Whether you choose to recognize it or not is your choice.

Not to worry beat, hutter is suffering from a momentary lapse of reason.

My husband quit a profitable job with Chevron to work in the environmental sector for much less pay and I do volunteer work. There is a lot of stuff we live without but none of it is necessary. Bottom line we live very cheaply. Unfortunately Bush is making us pay for that decision. I imagine we will never retire.

I agree about the greater good. Beyond that I believe that what serves the common good serves me and mine as well. If you're rich in a poor world you have to spend your life defending your wealth. You end up living in a mean, sad world filled with disease and death where everyone hates you.
