Thanks all! My perspective has been adjusted a little. Thank God it's not termites.

I'll try the gum DG. I haven't heard of that one.
I found a ton of them attacking the apples I bought yesterday. Threw out the apples and Windexed the little bastards into oblivion.

Honestly, good, old fashioned ant traps seem to be doing the job. At least they're not traveling across my living room anymore.

Christ, it's not like I leave food everywhere!

We have cicadas here too Manekineko - not like those in Japan - but I'm real familiar with the noise. It always makes me think of summer.

Scorpions are a mixed blessing. For the most part they mind their own business, and they kill and eat any other insects unlucky enough to cross their path. Outside of scorpions, I had NO bug problems when I lived in Arizona. I did get stung once, but the worst I got from it was nausea for a few days (the variety in the scorpions in the Mesa area were pretty small, about the size of a quarter).

We're having cockroach problems. It's not like we are nasty, dirty people--we're definitely not. My co-workers keep trying to reassure me that cockroachs are something I've got to get used to out here. Yay me!

Little bastards run fast.

I'm thinking about getting a cat. We used to always have a cat (or two or three or four), and we never had bug problems. Until now.

Wolver, sorry you hate ants. They actually are the only insect I kind of like. They're fun to watch, although I guess I wouldn't be too amused to see them trucking through my living room. When my brother and I were kids, we'd get an empty bottle and fill it full of sand and those big red and black ants. We'd leave them alone until they had built a series of tunnels and then we'd play earthquake and shake up the jar just to bury them and see them get all pissed off.

My brother would go out of his way to mix the red and black ants with the plain red ants. It created some serious ant jihad in his jar.

1) While on the highway in my VW one morning, I felt a tickle on my leg. Didn't think anything about it until I just happened to glance down and see a very large writing spider making its way over my shin. Since I was traveling at 60+ mph on the highway in morning traffic I did the only sensible thing possible and immediately took my hands off the wheel and my eyes off the road and started screaming and tapdancing like crazy, trying to get rid of that big spider. To this day, I don't know how I didn't completely smash the car.

2) We had gotten a quick takeout dinner (meat and veg plates) from a local spot and were both sitting in front of the TV, chowing down on our dinners. Everything was going fine until I hit something extra crunchy in my turnip greens. At first, I thought it was a little crispy bacon meat. Well it was meat, just the wrong kind. I finally decided I didn't want to risk it and spat it out into my hand. Gross...it was a large chunk of well done grassshopper. [xx(]

We had ants last year, all over the front and back of the house. I dropped a crisp on the carpet one day and watched it be carried off through a hole in the skirting. Evil little things were everywhere. I tried putting ant traps, poison and even jam down but to no avail. Then one day while digging in the back garden I noticed a line of ants going into a crack between two patio slabs and decided to lift one of the slabs up for a better look. Underneath it was BLACK with thousands of the little fuckers so the call went out immediately "Stick the kettle on!". It took three kettles full of boiling water to kill them all but I've had no problems with them since. That said, Summer is on its way so we'll have to wait and see.

I get crickets in my basement every now and then. And those giant black ants in my kitchen come spring and summer. Ortho works damned good [^] A couple of sprays and I never see them again. Fuckers [:(!]

There is a Ant in South America called a Bullet Ant. They say when it bites you, the pain feels like you have been shot with a gun. [:0]

Birdmadgirl, living in the desert, you DO have to "just get used to the cockroaches". Ugh! They're awful. I'm used to them, but I certainly don't like 'em. We lay boric acid all over the place and that works really effectively. Safe for humans and pets, too.
But ants are tough as heck to get rid of.
AMDRO is THE BEST for the giant FIRE ANTS, though. For those of you with giant Fire Ants, try it; you'll be amazed.

Ok so I'm in an apartment building in Coney Island going to visit a client. They had just washed the floors and it was summer so it felt like a rain forest. It was really hot. I guess the bugs felt it too. I'm walking down the hall and BAM! There is a giant roach on the floor in front of me. Not the tiny ghetto roaches, A GIANT. So I freeze. I start talking to myself . Ok, walk around it. It moves. Ok, jump over it. What if it lunges at me? Now it starts walking to me. 6' tall, 190lbs of me starts backing up.What am I going to do? Ok, great plan! Go down the staircase to the next floor then come up the other set of stairs...on the other side of the beast. (each floor has 2 sets of stairs) So I go down the stairs and.........ANOTHER ONE!!!!!! On the wall! I"M TRAPPED! I cant go back, he is waiting for me. I must pass this one on the stairs. I can do it. Remain calm and slip by like a ninja! Ok, here I go.... slowly....slowly....swoosh! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Roaches don't have wings! Why are you opening your wings? It FUCKING JUMPS AT ME! I'm on the stairs! I hold up my files to block him and I stumble out the original door! I let out a blood curdling scream!I fly through the door back into the hall and rum right into #1! I stumble and jump over him then look down. #2 is ON MY FILE!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!I tossed my files and ran!
The poor people in the apartments on that floor must have thought a girl scout was getting knifed by the sound of my screams!

No infestation problems, but I do have an insect horror story.

I was nine years old, and stepped on a hornet's nest in between the roots of a tree. They weren't happy. Total stings, about 40.

Dude! Hornets? Thats bad! You must have went to the hospital right? Hornets are nasty and smart. If you attack one and do not kill it, it comes back looking for you. Trust me, I know. But that is a story for another day.
