For any 1394 drive/enclosure, best to get one that uses the Oxford 911 chipset or you will be sorry, although you probably don't have to worry about it if you use it exclusively with a Mac.

"Delayed write failure" is not fun

PS. And watch out for insanely bright blue LEDs.

Wow, I had forgotten about some bad experiences while moving to Mac OSX. Non-911 drives would sometimes get wiped if you had them connected while upgrading. Various other maladies are indeed related to poor Firewire implementations. I know this sounds ridiculously esoteric, but this advice is important, and the Fantom drives are indeed 911s.

Yes, I am an idiot with this stuff. So, is it OK or not OK to use this one with a mac?

I currently have all my music on an external, but would like to have another to back up both the hard drivwe and the "external of sound" so I don't lose anything. Is Blir's link a good choice?

So buy it at Office Depot, and PriceMatch it to Staples.

Nice deal on a bare drive TinTwin. I wonder if Staples will indeed price match AND give the extra rebate.

Also, caution to those looking for an external - this in internal only, although super-cheap enclosures can be had for ~$10, though undoubtedly not Oxford chipsets. Man, makes that Terabyte drive network seems like a snap now! [:p]

Office Depot will defintely price match Staples and process the rebate.

Recently I got Office Depot to price match Circuit City on a SanDisk 1GB MP3 player, which also had a $60 rebate. I wound up paying $11.
I was pissed cause some friends also were able to use a $15 Office Depot coupon and got it for free.
