<p align="justify">Currently settled back in south Orange County, California[8D] It's not the way it's presented on the television and movies ([i]Orange County[/i], "The OC," "Laguna Beach," etc). Heck, I don't know anyone who calls this place "the" OC. You'd have to be oblivious and stupid, or from out of town to call it that. Anyway, I live on the south east, where all the suburban housing is located, so the beach is a little further away (about a 30-45 minute drive if I take all of Crown Valley Parkway to Pacific Coast Highway). I've been used to having the beach be at a 15-minute drive at most while I lived in SD, but south OC is better in terms of low, low, low crime rate (at least where I'm located). I can leave my place and car unlocked, and I don't have to worry about my shit getting stolen. I can go out jogging or for a walk without worrying about getting mugged, etc. Very quiet, secluded, and clean. I dunno about the "diversity." Last I looked, the city where I live at was something like 89% white, 6% Hispanic, and 5% everything else. The major downside is that since this place is suburban and family-oriented, shops close at 10 or 11pm[xx(] On the plus side, there's a lot of this:

Looks good in the morning and the afternoon... although it can look kinda creepy at night (it's a cool kind of creepy[}:)] ). I was driving a little further up near O'Neil Park and the ranches there looked cool. That's very secluded there. If I had the cash, I'd love to get a small piece of land there.

Then, there's central Europe: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, etc. Eastern Europe ranks a third in my eyes[8D] SoCal peeps have little to no culture and zero personality... which is why I dig living at a secluded area[}:)]

L.A. BABY!!! Wouldn't want to be anywhere else. We've got tons of great music, we get all the movies a week before the rest of the country (not counting NYC), we have people from all around the world living here, AND the ocean is never too far away.

On the downside:
$30 parking in Hollywood
Every man, woman, child, and dog seems to have a plastic surgeon
We have a minor traffic problem

Great winters. NO SNOW!! Summers are hot and sunny w/no humidity.
Housing is cheap. Mexican food is awesome. We have mountains, desert and the ocean is only a 5 hour drive.

I'll put in another plug for Salt Lake City. The fantastic outdoor recreation opportunities are tough to beat. Great hiking, biking and skiing within a very short drive. The city is small enough that crime and traffic aren't bad, but large enough to support high quality theatre, and a professional symphony and opera. The pay to cost of living ratio for someone in my profession is very favorable.

The A's are doing good Cal footbal might end up in the Rose Bowl. We don't have as bad of a gang problem as LA. We got this space museum up on Skyline Dr. in the hills. Granted the Raiders Suck but who cares. Yeah we have Heroin users that like to get high on BART and the transit authority says it's OK. Sure you can go to the City (SF) but who the hell wants to go there. Oakland has everything for me I can even cross another bridge and get to 6 Flags for some fun. And the Reno/Lake Tahoe area is a 3-4 hour drive away.

Back in the new wave/ Punk Rock day we had: The Mabuhay Gardens, On Broadway, The Tool and Die, The Deaf Club, The Stone, Key Stone Berkeley, Key Stone Palo Alto, The Berkeley Square, The Farm, Echo Beach, Stargaze, The I Beam and 10,000,000 otherplaces to go!!!

Wendy M, don't bitch about parking in Hollywood Parking in Downtown SF is 4 times more!

waldnorm, Last lime I looked Piedmont and Montclair is pretty white even more so if you go over the hill so I dissagree there are racially separated neighborhoods especially when you get to the 925!

Oh yeah Don Nelson is back with the GSW and we will get an 8 spot this April in the NBA Playoffs.

Live 105 will always SUCK and The Quake KQAK FM 99 will still be the greatest radio station ever!!!!!!!

What Ocean is this? LA is about a 6 hour drive plus 2 to navagate to Santa Monica from where you are at. Is this a 30 min trip to the Airport 30 min going through the airport teminal and a 3 hour flight to Xtapa, Mexico? One hour through customs and then bam your at the beach?

- abundance of lush green parks smack in the city
- view of the Charles River from either the Boston or Cambridge side
- very walkable city
- old brownstones and beautifully manicured side streets, particularily in Back Bay/South End
- how it looks beautiful in every season
- proximity to ocean
- the number of techie geeks, thanks to M.I.T. and such. I love geeks!

I love Albuquerque! I've moved around my whole life (my Pop was in the Army) and I've never lived for so long in one place before.

The WEATHER is awesome--it is seriously sunny here like 360 days of the year. Snow is rare, rain is infrequent. Fantastic SCENERY--huge mountains, mesas, dormant volcanos, lots of rocks, wide open blue sky, and forests down south. The temps are hot but not too hot, and the winters are hardly that. The FOOD is yummy--chile rules here, and we also have a huge amount of ethnic restarants. The PEOPLE are sooo friendly--people say hi to strangers all the time. Very colorful Hispanic traditions--sounds, tastes, colors, flavors too. We're big enough to get some culture--opera, theater, concerts--but my only beef is that we really don't get that many musical acts coming thru. That kind of sucks. The VIBE is fantastic--it's very laid-back, very mellow, it's the land of [i]manana[/i] ! No rat race, no hectic anything (altho I like hectic sometimes), very little pressure to do anything too fast. It suits me.

See, I've never seen a Star Wars film (cue up gasps now), but yes, you're right, YOU to me are the most famous person from Wiltshire. I was thinking more along the lines of music people. OMG, Stonehenge is in Wiltshire?? I've BEEN to Stonehenge! (But not to Strawhenge or Mudhenge. </Eddie Izzard>) So THAT'S Wiltshire! OMG, you aren't kidding about it being rural! But I also remember it as being really, really hilly. Very. Also very beautiful. So yeah, Sheffield must have been a shock to your system when you first moved there.

And yes, Tacoma is SO gorgeous. Everyone should go there. Everyone should also go to Vancouver. I remember taking a few day trips there when I was living near Tacoma and having SO much fun just gazing out, looking at the sights. And they have such great bakeries AND their burgers are made from Albertan beef, which to me is the best beef in North America. We moved to the Seatac area from the Bay Area in June 1989, which means we missed the Loma Prieta earthquake by only four months, and the Embarcadero Bridge, which we used to use a lot during the 18 months we lived in the Bay Area, was famously destroyed by said earthquake and never rebuilt. So I figure God must've wanted us there in the Seatac area for more than the one "it's really pretty there" reason.
