Best obscure tune from NWO recommendation

Not sure if we've had this topic lately.

What is the best obscure NW song that you've picked up as a result of someone else's either mentioning it on NWO or passing it on to you? This ought to be a song that you hadn't heard of before and chances are nil that you'd have ever found it on your own.

For me, it's "Hey Johnny" by Secret Service. I'd never heard of them. What instantly grabbed me (and still impresses me today) were the following:

- a very new wave dance-oriented hook that has simmering in it somewhere some speck of Abba influence (I like when a song brings some innovation to but still respects my subjective version of the pop music canon. And yes, Abba holds a solid place in my version of the pop music canon)

- the rough edge from the back-up vocals that kick in on the verses

- and a great chorus

That's tough, there have been quite a few. I'd have to go with Goutroy's posting of some tracks that turned out to be the group Food and Shelter. Fantastic lp, I could choose any of 5 or 6 songs from it.

I'll probably have something else hit me 5 minutes after I hit the post button, but i'll go with that. (for now)

Great thread, and a tough one indeed. I don't know if it's the best song of all, but the first that always pops to mind is Zaine Griff's "Ashes and Diamonds" LP and it's great title track posted my MikeP as a SOTW. There are certainly much rarer items than this, but this one had a great song and very interesting history attached so has stuck with me.

I think one of my absolute favorites would have been a posting from Goutroy, Experimental Products - Glowing in the Dark.

Nice & dark with a synth line which sounds exactly like the background soundtrack to the movie Halloween. Awesome song!

Actually, the two bands that come to mind are Moev (courtesy of devildog) and the Bolshoi (courtesy of fritzb). There is no particular song associated with Moev, although "No Flash in the Sky" is probably my favorite by them. With the Bolshoi, the name of the tune was "Please", which was used in one of fritzb's Name That Tune contests.

If I have to give a single song I'll go with "Secret Sound" by Dial M. Great band all around. Other favorites that I hadn't heard before NWO are Trees, Fay Ray, and Polyrock.

Tic Toc - "Twenty Questions"
Roaring Boys - "House of Stone"

Tough one cause I know whatever I pick--10 minutes later I'll think of something else. Zaine Griff's Ashes and Diamonds WAS a killer track though.

Austrailian Crawl also comes to mind. Boys Light up--a great tune I was unaware of--dont know who posted it--but their other stuff Ive discovered since I really like.

I could not get the point of their Gigantic Raft and White Man's Hut and Driving... was ok but not spectactular. When someone mentioned this on the board, I recalled having a copy and played it... It simply blew me away.

Tons of stuff, as most of my exposure to obscure NW has been from the Outpost. Off the top of my head, some of the best ones are:

Knowing You from Today - Sideway Look (from mskmember)
Images of Heaven - Peter Godwin (from ?)
Glowing in the Dark - Experimental Products (I got it from wolvy)
Edith Nylon c'est moi - Edith Nylon (also from wolvy)

I like these so much that I included three of the four on my 50 favorite songs list that Blir recently compiled. (Glowing in the Dark narrowly missed the cut...)
