What killed new wave??

I mean grunge killed the 80's hair bands, but what was the cause for new wave to burn out????

Record executives and the people who they hire to "feel the pulse of the kids today". Those people didn't have a clue about what was going on out there.

"We need a single"! "You need to be more commercial"! "Put these dancing girls in your video"!

It all became mainstream and you got bands like Wham, Kim Wilde, Animotion, Richard Marx etc. and tried to pass them off as "new wave".

Just my opinion.

Like any other cutting edge genre, the popularity killed it.

Once a music style starts being recognized by teh mainstream, producers and record label execs start purposely trying to release songs that will make the top ten. This often results in a watering down of the original 'edginess' and smooths the genre out into a pop formula.
Eventually, the top ten is littered with tons of "new wave" songs, and there usually ends up being a backlash. It happened to disco, hair metal,ect.nad I'm sure it will happen to the R&B that's all over teh radio, these days.

I would agree with you guys. I would add that also, once a style of music has been around for a few years, whether dominating the charts or not, it tends to die out after a while. I think it's a natural progression of the industry. We've seen it with New Wave, grunge, 90s "alt", boy bands, girl pop (Spice Girls, Britney, etc.), and soon I hope for the current so-called R-n-B.
If you look at the chart hits/ Top 40 for the 1st half of the 80s, it's dominated by either Lionel Ritchie-type balladry slop, or synthesized, overproduced pop like [i]Flashdance[/i]-type fluff. (Or also generic Rock). New wave didn't really dominate the Top 40. Nevertheless, NW was a potent force and was still subject to the usual patterns in popular music...eventually it just fades away in favor of the next new fad.
Once the industry seized onto NW, they co-opted it and it got watered down.

What killed new wave? I'll tell you what killed new wave.

Greedy record companies. Greedy "musicians". Talentless wannabies. CD's. MTV. Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Hip hop. Wham! The Smiths. Republicans in the whitehouse. Whatever happened in the UK between The Head on the Door and Parklife. Stupid clothes. Poofs wearing makeup and big hair. Cheesy synths. Oh yeah, and all you kids taping music from your friends instead of shelling out a few bucks to support the artists!

More importantly, who killed Bambi???[:D] But seriously....if I had to pinpoint an exact time and song that signified the end of new wave as we know it, the time would be 1992 and the song would be "Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots. Now don't get me wrong...I realize that musically "Plush" is an excellent song. But I remember very well when "Plush" became popular and was accepted as part of the new wave genre (even though by then it was more popularly referred to as 'alternative' or 'new music').

This was the first time a song with such obvious classic rock/ metal-sounding guitars and vocals was accepted as part of the new wave, alternative, or whatever you want to call it. From there the door was opened for bands like Korn, Bush, Alice In Chains, etc. So the next time you hear Metallica on your local alternative station, you can thank Scott Weiland!
