Comsat Angels released a Dutch radio sessions CD in 1993. As much as I liked the original version of "Cutting Edge", I think the live radio version tops it. As a matter of fact, I think at least half of the songs on the cd outdo the original versions.

I saw them at the HUB ballroom in 86 and in the middle of "Do It Clean" Ian mixed in a medley of "When I Fall in Love" (as made famous by Nat King Cole) and the Doors' "Roadhouse Blues."

Yup, "Bela" was the first song that popped into my head. The studio version is so dang claustrophobic and klangy, while the live version really opens up and breathes. The live version is a monster, much superior to the studio version.

I'll second "Be Stiff" as another superior live version, so much wound up energy, a really tight performance.

Definately U2's BAD from Wide awake in America, For a whole Live Album DM's 101 was pretty flawless..

I always thought the live version of Depeche Mode's Everything Counts that appeared on their greatest hits 1986-1998 sounded superior to the original. Not that I don't love the original.

In the live version I have, Ian riffs on "All You Need Is Love", "Sex Machine", "Land of 1000 Dances", and "When I Fall In Love". I can't hear any of those songs without thinking of "Do It Clean". Must have been a great show in the HUB. Never managed to see E & the BM live, sadly.

The 7" B-side to Peter Gabriel's 'Shock The Monkey' has a rousing live version of 'Solsbury Hill' that IMO is much better than the studio cut.

[/quote] Calls to mind David Johansen's classic <a href="http://www.zshare.net/audio/3594628814fe80/" target="blank">'Animals Medley' (Live)</a> which still holds up quite well IMO while better complimenting his proto-punk heritage than.. er.. Buster Pointdexter[B)]

I know that Toyah is not really very popluar here, but her live albums were awesome & I tend to like the live versions better than the regular album ones. Ieya, Victims of the Riddle, Bird in Flight and Tribal Look from '79's "Toyah, Toyah, Toyah" are my favorites.

My favorite would have to be Brave New World from the '82 Toyah on Tour album - the live version builds up the anthemic quality of the song. Her band certainly takes most of the credit for that - they were terrific. I also liked The Angel & Me from that album a lot, much more stripped down and percussive than the studio version - even though it omits a few verses!

Some really early Depeche Mode tracks that appeared on the first three L12s. That intro of It's a Small Town that segues into My Secret Garden from the Hammersmith Odeon 1982(?) show is great.

Ice Machine from the Blasphemous Rumours 12", as well as Somebody (prefer this older live version over the one on 101).

There's a part of Enjoy the Silence from the Condemnation 12" that I really like ... where it sort of sounds like it is in slow motion for a few seconds.

Back in the mid to late 80s, I always wished that they would re-record some of their early tracks.

I'll add a non-new wave one because it's probably my favorite concert footage of all time - Portishead Live at Roseland. It's just dark and gritty and rich and completely absorbing. The DVD is a must-have for any Portishead or 90s trip hop fan. The music is fuller and more dramatic than anything off their studio albums. Odd though that the concert CD and DVD are actually different - slightly different selections, and the DVD is far superior.

That acoustic version on the Greatest Hits bonus disc or DVD is quite good, also.
