Best Pipes in NW: Male and Female

Male: I've found Neil Tennant's voice to be among the most pleasing to listen to. I've always liked Jimmy Somerville's technical ability, at least as a falsetto. It was his work on the Orlando soundtrack that really caught my attention - more so than any Bronski Beat or Communards tracks.

My third pick would be Tim Booth of James or maybe Paul Heaton for the unique harmonies inherent in his voice. I'm surprised no mention of Andy Bell. I also agree about the plug for Marian Gold of Alphaville - I've heard a live-in-the-studio performance they did for a local radio station and was totally blown away by it. Been trying to find a copy of it for years.

Female: like so many of us . . . Annie Lennox has to be at the top (her Central Park DVD performance is phenomenal), followed by Kate Bush and Allison Moyet.

Second only to Mr Gold is Andy Bell. I'm glad someone mentioned him. Spend a lifetime trying to sing like the two of them and you'll end up in a halfway decent cover band.

Pipes, eh? I'm not necesarrily hung up on conventional pipes, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned Kate Pierson of the B-52's and when you put her next to Cindy Wilson, those were incomparable vocal harmonies. For males, I might go with Elvis Costello, because I gained my own vocal range, singing along to Armed Forces as a teenager.
