I disagree. I think saying "many women" is a broad and reckless statement without much data to back it up. Furthermore, when you say that the maternal style is at odds with the "iron fist" style that implies equal but opposite force, rather than one style being supreme to another. AND, why is Margaret Thatcher the exception rather than the norm? Possibly because she has the privilege of being famous. How many women are out there just like her who are private citizens rather than public figures? The only reason people see her as an exception is because she doesn't fit the widely known stereotype.

I know that there are plenty of women out there who are not "maternal" and/or who are savvy enough to know the difference between personal issues and work ethic. This archaic perception that we have of women as being emotionally crippled harkens back to the Iron age (and is the whole reason behind the Women's Sufferage movement). If this notion isn't androcentric then I don't know what is. If you concede that this "crippling" is fact then you deny women of all the rights they have been so far afforded and contribute to the ignorant notion that women are too emotional to make ANY important decisions and/or to have any of the rights and privileges afforded to men.

LOL

If there were any man we required help from, you'd be the first choice! [:D]

I think, because I was on the college library computer, things were getting messed up. Also, I didn't have the garbage can option from there. Luckily, I'm home now. [:D]

Eh...
You make good points[:)]; however, I still have observed far too many female bosses who have let their emotions get the best of them. It doesn't mean us women are weak...or incapable. Each woman boss is different; each has a different leadership style. And men have been observed to also act emotionally-driven as well. I'm a feminist...women can and should be able to do whatever the heck they want. Personally I do not buy into it, but jeez we all have seen how mercilessly women get skewered when they are perceived as too "harsh". I think that criticism is stupid and pointless, myself, but look at how Hilary Clinton gets skewered whenever she shows firmness. It's like society has this antiquated notion that women should all be loving, maternal, sweet, and collaborative. Such women get adored and praised. When a woman such as Thatcher shows some balls, she gets frowned upon.

I dunno, if we're going to base this on personal experience then I would have to say that MY OWN personal experience has been pretty even. I have had crazy female bosses, bitchy female bosses, soft female bosses, GREAT female bosses. I have also had crazy male bosses, asshole male bosses, pervert/creepy male bosses (okay, so I've never had a female boss hit on me- but give me time![:D]), weak male bosses and GREAT male bosses. (I use the term "boss" loosely to include supervisors, managers, and other various leadership roles.)

At the end of the day, the only point I want to make is that there is absolutely no proven biological reason why women cannot hold leadership roles with any more or less success than a man. A uterus isn't a liability and a penis isn't an advantage (unless you're in porn or prostitution, of course!) in the work place. [:D]

I hope that works. A friend of mine e-mailed me this article. I wish I'd had it a week or so ago!

So, are you saying that if Wal-mart had more women on the board of directors they would be even more hated because it would be a bigger monster than it already is??

If women had a more prominent role in management, they'd probably release all the indentured servants who are required to work at WalMart for meager wages in deplorable work conditions.

(On a side note, if employees are treated so horribly at WalMart, how come that 84 year old greeter is so happy to see me all the time?)

^^^ Very funny and they need that income... they didn't save enough and lived to long... "hope I die before I get old" ^^^

On another note, I came back in here to post this lengthy (IMHO for the Internet) 4-page article from MSN Business section on Wal*Mart that a good friend of mine e-mailed to me.

It's a good read, makes some great points, and has some real keen insights, and why the chain is struggling now:

Enjoy! [:D]
