Old mix tapes

Postby Max Murdoc » Thu Jan 17, 2008 1:22 am

There was a thread on this awhile back. We made a mixer out of scrap stuff lying around (old knobs, radio shack parts and Bic pen casings) and used 2 turntables to make these mix tapes that I've been re-doing through Adobe Audition. You had to sit there and cue up the next to go.....what fun that was. I remember getting almost all the way through a 90 min. tape (45 a side) and having a bad mix (missed cue...etc.) and having to start all over again. Good stuff.

We were quite inventive on our mixes....places snippets of dialog from the Eraserhead soundtrack. You had to be quick to get the next one up and ready to go. We never had a list to work off of....just grab what you thought sounded good and put it in.

I've been having fun with tape recorders since I was 8. I remember doing a 10 minute mash-up of OMDs 'Telegraph' and Madness 'One Step Beyond' in 1983 with snippets of our church pastor saying absurd things, and other found recordings (sesame street etc). we did it on a reel to reel tape...how I wish I had that tape...

I used to record new wave mix tapes and meld them with video for use at my parties. I always liked throwing in people's "catch phrases" (often looped on my old Casio SK-1 keyboard). I was pretty rough, but that was charm of it, and when people were drunk, it all made sense.

Here's a video of my old job set to New Order's "Confusion." Again, not a cinematic nor sonic masterpiece, but got a lot of laughs at parties: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiD-toue-I0
