Ocean Blue - Between Something and Nothing

"In the fading twilight
I sit and stare at her
In all her beauty
Her beauty
You know I have to wonder
Why all great men must die
And leave their treasure
They leave their treasure"

Oingo Boingo - Little Girls

I love little girls they make me feel so good
I love little girls they make me feel so bad

Yeh, but in the Phillipines they're "Breaking Logs!" When incarcerated. [}:)]

"The slump by the courthouse
With windburn skin
That man could give a fuck
About the grin on your face
As you walk by, randy as a goat"

I had to listen to the Gang of Four rack to get the lyrics I remembered I liked from "Cheese Burger:"

"I’m at the wheel of the company truck
on the road and all alone
sometimes I think money is my only goal
it makes me sad
work on up another four miles
coffee fries and a cheeseburger"

Don't know why, but this has stuck in my brain since I bought the record "Solid Gold."

"The moment I was born I opened my eyes
I reached out for my credit card"
Gang of Four - Capital (It Fails Us Now)

"Who makes the rules that make people select
Who is to judge that your ways are correct
The media as watchdog is absolute shit
The TV telling you what to think"
The Jam - Art School

The whole fuckin' song...
"This is a modern world - This is the modern world
What kind of a fool do you think I am?
You think I know nothing of the modern world
All my life has been the same
I've learned to live by hate and pain
It's my inspiration drive -
I've learned more than you'll ever know
Even at school I felt quite sure
That one day I would be on top
And I'd look down upon the map
The teachers that said I'd be nothing
This is the modern world that I've learnt about
This is the modern world, we don't need no one
To tell us what's right or wrong -
Say what you like 'cause I don't care
I know where I am and going to
It's somewhere I won't preview
Don't have to explain myself to you
I don't give two fucks about your review"
The Jam - The Modern World

"And the public wants what the public gets
But I don't get what this society wants
I'm going underground, (going underground)"
The Jam - Going Underground

"I realize a miracle is due
I dedicate this melody to you
But is this the stuff dreams are made of
If this is the stuff dreams are made of
No wonder it feels like I'm floating on air
Everywhere, it feels like I'm everywhere"

Chameleons-Second Skin

"Ive got one, two, three, four, five
Senses working overtime
Trying to taste the difference
tween a lemon and a lime
Pain and the pleasure
And the church bells softly chime"

XTC-Senses Working Overtime

"looking like a born again
living like a heretic
listening to arthur lee records
making all your friends feel so guilty
about their cynicism
and the rest of their generation
not even the government are gonna stop you now"

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions--Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?

"You offer infrared instead of sun
You offer paper spoons and bubble gum"

Prefab Sprout--Faron Young

"Since we're skimming the surface darling
Now's time to get in deep
You've opened up the envelope
But there's still one secret you keep"

General Public - Tenderness

I don't know where I am, but I don't like it
I open my mouth and out pops something spiteful
Words are so cheap but they can turn out expensive
Words like conviction can turn into a sentence

I could give you dozens more, but that's always been my favorite. I seem to be in good company on that one since Surly uses part of the verse in his sig line. That whole album was full of great lyrics including the previously mentioned "Never You Done That" and "Anxious".

Prefab Sprout - Ice Maiden

Welcome to the glow, of high octate affairs
Esperental style, and blond disheveled hair
Subterannean streams, duckling you're a swan
An infinity of dreams, imploding into one

ABC - Say It

A ripple of uncertainty became a tide of change
That wave became an ocean and now you're out of range

Sylvian and Sakamoto - Heartbeat

It speaks to ghosts and souls alike
Springs to life, and doesn't think twice
Wrapped in the blood sail
Bathed in snow
Nailed to the source and it won't let go
Fed on the bible, grown from trees
It opened the mind and the heart was free
A home in the silence, safe from sound
Where trouble sleeps and the light is found

That's great, a fan of MWH. Anyway, I'd rather pick their "I don' want to be a messiah, messiahs die young".

I also enjoyed very much all of my life ABC's "If you judge a book by the cover / then you'd judge the look by the lover". I'm not quite sure it makes any sense, but it... looks... good.

He dug a hole in the ground
When no one was looking
It took him years to be found

You might never need one

David Sylvian - Wanderlust

That tug at the truth
I'm taking no sides
Now I recognise you

It's not much lyrically, but I have a favorite memory of The Plimsouls' "Now" lyrics. I wonder if we sometimes forget how hard it was to get some lyrics back in the day. They weren't always on the liner, and there certainly was no internet. My buddies and I loved the fast chorus part of "Now", but Peter Case sang it so fast, it was hard to hear exactly what it said. We must have spent an hour winding and rewinding a cassette tape of it. The payoff to finally having figured it out came one night at the fire pits of Bolsa Chica State Beach. OC/LA folks will remember what a killer spot this was to just go hang out with some booze and a bonfire. For us, these lyrics from "Now" were sort of the equivalent to the "I love you baby" lyrics from "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" like you see in some movies. I still remember my buddies drunkenly shouting out these lyrics to our girls that night...

They'll never take this night away
It's yours and mine until the day
It's all right for one night

We'll never have this chance again
So love me now and we'll pretend
It's all right for one night...right now!

Can't recall though that any of the girls took us up on that offer. [B)] ...but great times regardless.

Yeah...lines like that worked about as well as
"I'm going to have sex with you tonight anyway. You might as well be there".

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.
